Get those winners in the
bank first
By Phillip Alder
Francis Macdonald Comford wrote,
“Every public action which is not cus-
tomary, either is wrong or, if it is right, is
a dangerous precedent. It follows that
nothing should ever be done for the first
time.”
On the first of the month, this deal fea-
tures a “first” that is important to keep in
mind. Look at the West and North hands.
Against four spades, you (West) cash the
ace and king of diamonds, everyone fol-
lowing. What would you do next?
When you are defending, it is crucial to
track the high-caid points. Here, the
dummy has 13 and you have 16. That
leaves only 11 missing, yet South had
enough to jump to game on the second
round. He must have the spade ace-king
and heart ace. So, there is no point in
shifting to the heart jack. The fourth
defensive trick will have to cqme from
the trutAp suit. In that case, you must
hope that East holds the spade nine.
Perhaps you continued with a low dia-
mond at trick three. If so, there is good
news and bad news. The good news is
that partner does ruff with the spade nine.
But the bad news is that South doesn't-
overruff; instead, he discards his single-
ton club, making a loser-on-loser play.
Your side gets only three tricks.
When trying for an uppercut, first take all .
of your side-suit tricks. At trick three,
cash the club ace. Then lead the low dia-
mond — there is good news and more
good news.
