NEW YORK (AP) - A great

ness trends, including the rash
of conglomerate mergers.
The attitude of the adminis-
tration is dispelling some loose-
ly held notions that big business
would have a freer hand for at
least the next four years. It isn’t
working out that way.
To determine how energetic
and how long lived will be this

This report was begun in the
Johnson administration and
completed last summer.
The Nixon people were quiek
to make it known that publica-
tion did not constitute endorse-
ment of the findings, but their
action did, by implication, mean
endorsement of further study
and comment.
Just a couple of days earlier,
the Army canceled a $875-mil-
lion heli'copter contract with
Lockheed Aircraft Corp.,
move viewed as an effort by De-
fense Secretary Melvin R. Laird
to hoid business to the letter of
contracts.
Lockheed, the 35th largest In-
dustrial company with annual
sales jii'Bccess of $2 billion
year, was accused of defaulting
the contract—a charge de-
nied by Lockheed—to produce a
250-mile-an-hour helicopter gun-
ship.
This was a bombshell, and the
fragments hit not only the giant
aircraft company but its hun-
dreds of suppliers.
There are no larger contracts
awarded in America today than
those betweeiilhe military and; >
its suppliers., Almost every
large company shares in this
work, and all therefore have
been put on notice.
