are not, and dust is a real prob-
lem here.
Contrary to popular belief,
Alaska is not a land of perpetual
ice and snow. We have already
seen three seasons, summer, fall
and winter, and old-timers tell
us that the springtime is one of
the loveliest. We have seen huge
fields of many varieties of wild-
flowers,. We have enjoyed eating
the fruit of the land from vege-
tables to lovely berries of all
kinds. Even got to try some
moose steak which is quite good.
The salmon, too, were delicious
and Doug caught some trout on
one of his trips to King Salmon
(there is an Air Base there).
We live north of Anchorage in
a small two bedroom apartment
just off base. We hope to move
into quarters in the spring. The
base is quite nice with just about
anything available one wants or
needs. There have been constant
improvements just in the short
time we have been here. So we
expect to see many more during
our three-year tour* here. Doug
is the only Military Air Trans-
port Service (MATS) Chaplain in
Alaska. He flies from the west
end of the Aleutian Island Chain
to the northern Arctic Circle of
Point Barrow, and in between to
such cities and towns as Fair-
banks. We were quite happy
when they were passing out pro-
motions that Doug was included.
His Captaincy becomes effective
in April.
Prue particularly enjoyed at-
tending choir school which was
held two weeks in August with
Dr. John Williamson as Director.
It was quite an inspiration to
work under him and to be in a
100-voice choir. One night when
coming home from school, she
was surprised by seeing northern
lights. This is a magnificent sight
and is very difficult to describe.
They tell us that the colder the
night the more colorful the lights
become.
Charles is in the first grade
and is trying to learn many new
things. The three children have
accepted their new home well
and have made a number of
friends. They were so thrilled
and excited with the first snow

R. D. Kothmann reports good
use from his two year old plant-
ing of blue panic grass. Koth-
mann has approximately 40
acres of blue panic grass he has
irrigated. He likes the grazing
quality of the grass and its abili-
ty to bounce back after grazing.
