low!
up a slow deliberate ball game
that wm being dominated by
Killeen'a 6 foot, 5 inch hot shot,
A1 Jones.
The big Negro veteran of Kil-
leen’s regional bid in Class 3A
last year, popped ,40 field goals
and hit five consecutive free
throws for 25 points. .
And largely because of Jones,
Killeen moved Into a eecond quar-
ter lead that stood up until the
last three mlnutci of this opening
round dash of the South San An-
tonio Invitational Basketball Tour-
nament. ■
It was at that point that Bay-
town’* Roger Byers cashed a pair
of field goal* that edged the (San-
ders into the lead for the first
time In more than 16 minutes of
playing time. From there, Bay-
town wept on to claim a 47-44 vic-
He was the only double-
■orer for the club and was
accurate from the field.
Ganders had managed a
first period lead, but Jones
a second quarter bid by
een that overhauled Baytown
midway of the period. Killeen led
25-22 at intermission and retained
a 3-point edge after three quar-
ters, 36-33.
Killeen was never able to push
its lead up. however, as the two
dubs stayed V 2 or 3 points
apart into the lest three minutes I with 1:01 left in the game to pro-
of play. serve their slim lead, and Killeen
Die Ganders put In their full got possession again only —
court press with about two min-1 '
tites left in the third quarter and
that on a ateal from Robert Oliv-
er. But Killeen missed its scoring
opportunity and the Ganders fin-
ished out the game with the stall.
Byers and Ellis Smith were the
two double-figure scorers tor Bay-
town, notching 14 and 10 points,
respectively. Byer* also had six
rebounds to lead a rebounding
night that induded only, 17,10 of
those defensive bounces John
Durham grabbed four and Ray
Goehring and Oliver got three
each.
Baytown hit 48 per cent of its
shot* from the Add by connect
ing on 18 of 37 attempts.- The
Gander percentage from charity
was miserable, however, as Bay
town hit only 11 of 19 tor 58 per
eent. Killeen sank 43 per cent ot
its 39 shots and hit 10 of 13 free
throw* for 75 per cent
