The Mathis High School
Pirates lost 1-0 in the opening
district baseball game in
Refugio Friday.
Clay Nelson, the losing
pitcher, gave up one run on one
hit, struck out 5, and walked 3.
Refugio scored its run in the
second inning when Leland
Sledge got on base by an error
by the Mathis shortstop. The
next batter walked, Rene
Garcia hit the ball to Pirate
second baseman who fumbled
the ball, then threw wildly to
first base. This allowed Sledge
to score.
Bobcat Dewey Bellows got
the hit off Nelson, and it was a
single. Arthur Rodriquez
pitched for Refugio. He gave
up no runs on one hit, didn’t
walk anybody, and struck out
six. Nelson got the hit for
Mathis.
“It was a good game,” Coach
Danny Kureska related, “but
two errors in the second inning
beat us. It was a good game for
both pitchers.”
Rain cancelled Tuesday’s
game at Ihgleside. It is re-

Rain caused the Western
Auto Women’s Softball
Tournament to be postponed
until Sunday Apr. 11, at
Cherokee Field.
The games went according to.
schedule all day last Saturday
ending the preliminaries after
six games.
The Beeville Super Star team
has been the only team
eliminated so far. The Super
Star’s first loss was to the
Mathis Western Auto
Cherokees and their second
loss was to the Mathis Red Sox
team, thus eliminating them
from the tournament. Five
teams are still competing for
the first and second place
trophies. The five teams
consist of two teams from
Beeville (the Pros and the
Rookies) and three teams from
Mathis, the Western Auto
Cherokees, the Roadrunners
and the Red Sox.
The Western Auto Cherokees
will be the only undefeated
team participating in Sunday’s
game. All the other teams have
lost one game and can not
afford to lose another game.
Western Auto would like to
take this opportuntiy to thank
all the spectators that found
time from their busy schedules
to attend the tournament
making it a great success. The
only regret was that due to
Sunday’s rain, the tournament
could not be terminated.
Everybody is again invited
this Sunday to watch the
Mathis Red Sox take on the
Beeville Rookies at 11 a.m. and
the Mathis Roadrunners tangle
with the Beeville Pros for the
second game. The triumphing
team of the top mentioned
teams will then battle with the
undefeated Western Auto
Cherokees for the finale, this
deciding the first and second
place winners.
