A Different
Tune Today
By TOM BLAIR
Copley News Service
HOLLYWOOD - The last time
crooner Mel Torme passed this
way. be was singing the blues In
fact, he wasn’t singing at all His
career as vocalist was on hold,
and Torme was crisscrossing the
country at so unholy pace, pro-
moting his first novel. "Wynner.’’
a tough look at show business
through the eyes of a singer not
unlike himself
Despite the book s critical sue
cess. Torme was not a happy
man He was still consumed by a
bitter 1976 divorce from and
-—-subsequent well publicized court
battles with — his wile of 10
years, actress Janette Scott He
wasn t sleeping well And his
voice, he judged, had been wreck
ed by it
That was four years ago To-
day Tonne Is humming a dlf
ferent tune The man who has
been singing professionally lor 52
of his 56 years and who, a genera
tion ago. was dubbed "She Velvet
Fog has come out of his blue
funk
He is ndtng the crest of a wave
of unprecedented personal ac
claim and popularity
In an interview he talked a bit
about the old Mel Torme and a lot
about the new Mel Torme - less
brash no longer bitter content
with the state of his art and
gratified by the reactions of
^ critics, who ve been near
'unanimous in the opinion that
Torme is singing better than ever
One of the critics said
something to the effect that at
ar. age when most singers seem to
diminish in power and capacity
and control Torme seems to be
reversing the order of things I'm
not sure that s true, said T^orme
1 don't see any reason why
Mngers my age shouldn t be at the
topof his form
"I am singing better than ever
1 think there area lot of reasons
! ve been through some kind of
hard emotional times, which 1
think have actually helped me as
a singer 1 have a lovely lady who
brightens my life, ami that helps a
whole lot be said
It s no; secret I don't drink.
I’ve never smoked a cigarette -
r ~ >r anything else - in my life
That s not a badge of honor. I just
don't And I get seven hours of
- eep a night That s very impor
tant Rich Little told me tie d been
hanging out with Frank Sinatra,
and frank looked at him and said.
__-> •in know 1 dor-! sleep much. I
get maybe three hours a night
• sometimes four 1 dori t know
about Frank, but for me.' said
Torme that would never re
juvenate my vocal chords ’
Jhat Torme is a* the peak of hpi
craft is evident in his most recent
album Mel Torme* Friends
a two-record set recorded live last
year at Marty's in New York City
Whether he is harmonizing w ith
Jams Ian on her Silly Habits
improvising with Gerry Mulligan
on their composition. "Real
Thing.” or trumpeting his voice to
C above middle-C on the tag to a
finely read interpretation of Billy
Joel s New York Slate of Mmd.
Torme rs a study In casual
discipline and unbridled nerve In
a musical era when the best of the
veteran pop singers can t even
sign a contract for one record
Mel Torme* Friends” has been
hot
That album has done better
commercially than any I've ever
had honest to God I don't know
what the exact figures are,''
Torme said, "but they read them
to me about three months ago,
and it was superb The reaction to
the new album was so nice that
we just went ahead and made
another one at Marty’s - just me
and the trio No friends this time
It II be out soon Another new
album I've done with George
Shearing in San Francisco, will be
out around the first of August
I can think of 15 or 20 superb
artists right now who are having
to pay for their own records And
i think there's something
shameful about that They pay for
their bwn sessions and then put
them out through a surrogate if
you will I just feel bad about it for
them I think every one of then
should be indemnified, so to
speak, by a big record company "
Torme s recording schedule
and personal appearance
schedule are equally frantic. In
hisworC^nuts.”
And I'm the first guy to smile
about it, ' he said Tm certainly
not complaining Because the last
four or live years have been the
greatest years for me. and the
greatest financial years I've ever
had in my life Much better than
The Velvet Fog years, any of the
^bobby-sox stuff"

Oswald Column hands
are almost always game or
slam contracu There are
two reasons for tkis The
first is"aai Dart scores are-
apt to be uninteresting the
second is tkai the play is apt
to be too complicated for tie
space available
Alan Here is a prosaic
one no-trump contract that
would be reached at every
table is any normal dupit

standard <.w .no-trump and
no other player has any rea

Oswald It also should be
' ao easy hand to play
Declarer is looking at six
quick trifkrarSI can get fas

induce an opponent to lead
the suit for him
Alan 'There is a fairly
straightforward way to
achieve this result South
should win the first
diamond run off all lour
dubs cash the aecond top
diamond and lead his six
spot As long as diamonds
''break- 4-2. the'defense can
cash a second diamond, but
must then head hearts or
