The days of Baytown being a small, qui-
et refinery town are over. The togetherness
that small towns feel across the country
has mostly evaporated and it has become
a sprawling suburb of 80,000 where peo-
ple from all over the country have come
to live in an area where jobs are plentiful.
But one day a year, Baytown is a small
town again. Graduates of the city’s first
two high schools, their families and cur-
rent students gather together to celebrate
the togetherness, grit and blue-collar work
ethic this city was founded on when Rob-
ert E. Lee and Ross S. Sterling battle on
the football field.
By the time the sun set on Baytown Fri-
day night, Sterling had The Game in hand,
and the Rangers were on the way to a
30-8 victory. But before the sun had even
cracked the horizon on Galveston Bay Fri-
day morning, the festivities surrounding
The Game began.
Houston television station KHOU was
at Lee High School in 5 a.m. with a gym
full of student, band members, cheerlead-
ers, former players and the Celebrities
were all on the morning newscast talking
about The Game.

Embattled
councilman lives
in two towns
BY MATT HOLLIS
matt.hollis@baytownsun.com
Baytown City Coun-
cilman David McCartney
says he spends his week-
day nights in his Baytown
home and weekends in
Mont Belvieu with his wife
and child.
He maintains this odd
arrangement
to continue
to serve on
Baytown
City Coun-1
cil, he said.
McCart-
ney said he
resides in
a six-bed- McCARTNEY
room,
six-bath, 4,589-square-
foot home on Oak Shad-
ows during the week. He
also has a large home on
5.5-acres on Eagle Drive
in Mont Belvieu where his
wife and daughter live.
“I spend the week here
and weekends over in Mont
Belvieu,” he said. “I spent
a majority of my time at the
Baytown residence because
I am on council.”
“I made a hell of a sac-
rifice to serve this commu-
nity. 1 have maintained two
houses and spent a great
deal of time away from my
family to serve this com-
munity,” McCartney said
Friday.
In 2008, when McCart-
ney challenged incumbent
Sammy Mahan for the Dis-
trict 6 seat, the question of
whether he was actually
a Baytown resident was
an issue because his chil-
dren attended Barbers Hill
schools and lived in a home
in Mont Belvieu,
In response to those
questions, McCartney said
in 2008: “Depending upon
what happens Saturday, I’ll
put one up for sale. I can’t
keep two houses. But if I
stay in Baytown, I’ll put
my kids either in BCA or
Goose Creek schools.”
However, McCartney did
not keep that pledge. He
still owns both homes. In

Fatal crashes less than 24 hours apart
claimed the lives to two women in
Baytown.
In the first incident a pedestrian was
killed on Highway 146 near Chambers
Town Center.
Police report that a male driver struck
29-year-old Jessica Smith in the roadway
about 4 a.m. Friday.
The driver told police he was driving
south on the highway, and turned his
head to make sure traffic was clear for
him to change lanes. When he turned
back forward, he said he saw the woman
but was unable to stop before hitting her.
Smith was flown to Me-
morial Hermann hospital
by Life Flight, where she
was pronounced dead.
Police said no charges
have been filed against
the driver, who remained
at the scene.
TADEO About 2:25 a.m. Satur-
day, 20-year-old Cassan-
