The teacher absenteeism was
fairly evenly spread throughout I

Hie schools. - — - ~— ---------4-
Because this is a time of high I
illness, there were not enough
substitute teachers to fill all the
vacancies Monday and some
classes had to be taught by
teachers on their regularly
scheduled conference periods
and by aides, Nettles said.
The months of December
through March always claim a
lot of teachers in illnesses and,
because many of the substitutes
teachers on the district's list also.,
are sick, there often are not
enough substitutes during those
months
Nettles asked that anyone in-
terested in being a substitute
teacher m any g-ade,
kindergarten through high
school, contact the personnel of-
ficem the School Administration
Building.
There arc three categories of
substitutes
• Those with degrees and
Texas teaching: certificates
These receive *28 per day when
they are teaching. The district
hay 44 such substitutes on its list:
• Those with degrees but

replace the Baytown tunnel." Rabat said after
the him "No two bridges are exactly alike,
though."
The present estimate of the cost of the bridge
is about K8 million, but Kabat said that figure is
based on 1977 costs With the 14 to 15 percent in-
flation rate in the construction industry, he said
the cost will probably soar to *100 million by the
time of completion
He told the group that the state constitution
requires that all projects be done oss a cash-and-
carry tests, ao the highway department must
hive the monev sit aside when the cqnttcts are
Nettles said more substitutes
are needed and are called by ad-
ministrators at each sehttd as
they are needed,
They are tuyed on a dav-tCKtay

it is hoped that the high
absenteeism wiU not hurt the
district financially as much as it
has in the past
For many years, the dis trict
was required to report atten-
dance for evety school day and
state funding paid on the
image duty attendance (AOA)
was based on those figures.
Kabat explained that
»u not needed to build
> tto state constitution gives
/ commission its own funds, most di
which come from the gasoime t^t, and the
authority to use them as it sees fit.
