oilGeneral Dynamics will provide volunteer support for
two major community efforts in late April. Hundreds of
volunteers are needed to work with the Area XI Special
Olympics on Saturday, April 23, and to support the March
of Dimes WalkAmerica/TeamWalk project on Sunday,
April 24.
"Many employees, family members and friends partici-
pated in both efforts last year and were quite pleased with
the positive response received as a result of their partici-
pation," said Norman B. Robbins, Manager of Commu-
nity Relations.
The recipient organizations were likewise pleased to
have had the support.
Volunteers for the Special Olympics are needed to help
stage the event on Saturday. In the past, volunteers have
staffed the concessions and worked as statisticians, timers,
water dispensers, medical assistants and as "huggers" who
congratulate and present ribbons to participants. Major
assistance is needed to help make sure the participants
are where they are supposed to be just prior to their in-
dividual events.
The Special Olympics will be held at the Fort Worth
Country Day School.
Begun in 1968, the Special Olympics goes beyond the
concept of winning or losing with the oath, "Let me win,
but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt." Ev-ery participant in the competition is treated the same, and
all receive recognition for their efforts. About 1,100 local
participants from seven counties are expected to take part
in the day-long track and field competition for the men-
tally handicapped.
On Sunday, volunteers are needed for the 18.6-mile
March of Dimes WalkAmerica/TeamWalk, which begins
and ends in the Stockyards and winds through Fort
Worth. Individual walkers are sponsored by others (on
a per mile basis) and walk to raise funds for the preven-
tion of birth defects. Walkers can either walk the entire
distance or part of it, depending on their desires, condi-
tions and abilities.
TeamWalk is the corporate component of WalkAmerica.
Last year, more than 90 companies and organizations par-
ticipated in the Fort Worth TeamWalk. TeamWalk is a
highly organized event supervised by qualified March of
Dimes volunteers and staff who work to ensure safe, un-
complicated success.
"Volunteer support will be appreciated by the commu-
nity, in general, and by those benefitting from these two
organizations, in particular," Robbins said.
Employees interested in volunteering for either or both
activities, or simply interested in additional information,
should contact Community Relations at Ext. 78294 or
