Feed Scarcity Makes
Culling Imperative
Local Ag. Teacher Says
One of the surest ways poultry
producers can make the best use of
available feed supplies is to cull all
non-layers and low producers from
their flocks, says I. N. Range, Mer-
cedes vocational agriculture teacher.
“With feed supplies short, rigid
culling of the flock is more impor-
tant than ever before,’’ he said. “By
removing the low producing and un-
profitable birds, the owner will have
relatively more feed for the higher
producing hens and in this way can
get more eggs from his feed sup-
ply.”
To get rid of poor layers, first re-
move all birds that are sick or
otherwise unsound. A cripple or
weak hen will not pay, and even-
tually will come down with disease.
It is important, therefore, to remove
birds that are sick or lame, decid-
edly undersized or underweight, or
that have deformities or weaknesses
of their backs, legs, breast, or
wings. Good culling also calls for
removing all mature hens that are
yellow-legged and fat. Vigorous
birds with red combs and wattles1,
bleached beak and legs, and a thin,
pliable abdomen, are usually in pro-
duction.
In culling, cautioned Range, con-
sideration should be given to whe-
ther the birds have had a fair
chance to lay. Low production may
be caused by improper feeding,
crowded and unsanitary conditions,
lice, mites, or intestinal worms.

It may be caused by disorder of kid-
ney function that permits poisonous
waste to accumulate. For truly many
people feel tired, weak and miserable
when the kidneys fail to remove excess
acids and other waste matter from the
blood.
You may suffer nagging backache,
rheumatic pains, headaches, dizziness,
getting up nights, leg pains, swelling.
Sometimes frequent and scanty urina-
tion with smarting and burning is an-
other sign that something is wrong with
the kidneys or bladder.
There should be no doubt that prompt
treatment is wiser than neglect. Use
Doan’s Pills. It is better to rely on a
paedicine that has won countrywide ap-
