MERCEDES—Bill Copeland son
of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Copeland
is undergoing a training and study
% period at Pan American Airways,
t Brownsville, prior to his appoint-
ment as a regular Steward of the
line. Bill Copeland is a graduate
of the Mercedes High School.
MERCEDES — The Mercedes
school auditorium was well filled
Friday night, when the High
School Band presented their an-
nual birthday program, under the
direction of William O’Hair, and
co-sponsored by the members of
the Band Mothers organization.
Presentation of three pins were
made by the Band Mothers to
band members who will graduate
this year. They were Bill Boiler,
who plays the bass horn; Mary
Marie Deyo, bassoon, and Arturo
Trevino, cornet.
The Band Mothers wish to
thank merchants and others here
who contributed so liberally in the
staginf of the event.
L. R. Graham Succeeds
E. H. Poteet in Schools
MERCEDES—Ernest H. Poteet,
superintendent of Mercedes schools
for the past fifteen years, has ac-
cepted the superintendency of Har-
lingen schools, a three-year con-
tract having been signed by the
Harlingen school board.
The Mercedes Independent
School Board has elected Mr. Leon
R. Graham, present principal of
the Mercedes High School, to fill
the vacancy caused by the resigna-
tion of Mr. Poteet.
Lions Nominate
New Officers
MERCEDES—Nominations for
officers of the Mercedes Lions
Club were made at the Tuesday
night meeting of the club held at
Waters Cafe. Nominations are:

ROTARY SPEAKER
MERCEDES—E. H. Kern, Mer-
cedes, was one of the principal
speakers who appeared on the pro-
gram at the District Rotary Con-
ference held at Corpus Christi over
the week-end. Mr. Kern addressed
the incoming presidents of Rotary
Clubs at a breakfast Tuesday
morning.
J. A. Slaughter, Mercedes, was
chairman of one of the luncheons
held during the meeting.
Attending the conference from
Mercedes, were Mr. and Mrs. Kern,
Mr. and Mrs. Slaughter, Mr. and
Mrs. Fred Johnston, Mr. and Mrs.
E. A. Brown, Mr. and Mrs. E. H.
Poteet, and Dr. O. G. Halliburton.
Formal Opening Of
Lions Field Wed.
MERCEDES —Formal opening
of the Mercedes Lions Field for
the softball season will be held
next Wednesday night, according
to Manager Ed Hauff.
The La Feria girls team will
play a team here that night, as
well as Nebenzahl’s, Mercedes,
team, the latter under the man-
agement of S. Hinojosa.
The first game will start at 8
p. m., and the second game will
start about 9:15.
Between the two games gate
prizes will be given away by Mer-
cedes merchants.
Father, Son Banquet
Is Great Success
MERCEDES — So successful
was the first Future Farmers As-
sociation Father and son banquet
held Wednesday night, by the
Mercedes High School FFA, that
it is expected to be an annual
event, according to W. T. Dudley,
sponsor. The boys pi’epared a large
part of the supper for the barbecue
and the FFA sweethearts, Dorothy
Jean Hornbeck and Sidney Clarke,
served the meal, with the assist-
ance of other girls. Grisham’s fur-
nished the ice cream and the Rain-
bo bread was also furnished.
The. brief program was opened
with the FFA creed by Tommy
Schwarz. Purposes of the organ-
ization was given by Jack Scott,
and the history of the FFA was
given^ by Oliver Young. Accom-
plishments were listed by George
Schwarz.
James Van Burkleo president of
this chapter, has been elected
president of the district FFA,
which automatically makes him
secretary of Area 10.
SOUTHLAND LIFE
MOVES UPSTAIRS
MERCEDES — The offices of
the Southland Life Insurance Co.
have been moved to the second
floor of the Central Office Bldg.
The offices were previously on
the ground floor of this building.
W. G. Greenlee has also moved
his office to the second floor of
this building.

CHAS. GERSON
MERCEDES — Charles Gerson,
Harlingen, Deputy District Gov-
ernor, Lone Star District, Asso-
ciation of 20-30 Clubs, addressed
the Mercedes 20-30 Club at their
meeting Monday night. Gerson
centered his talk around the build-
ing up of 20-30 Culbs.
Plans were made for a 100%
attendance from the Mercedes club
at the district 20-30 Club conven-
tion to be held in Corpus Christi
June 22.

FILED FOR SERVICE
EDINBURG — Hidalgo County
cotton farmers in nine gin com-
munities have filed applications
for cotton classing service under
the Smith-Doxey act, according to
information received today by J.
A. Oswalt, County Agricultural
Agent, from a representative of
the Agricultural Marketing Ser-
vice, a division of the United Sta-
tes Department of Agriculture.
For the past two weeks Mr. W.
G. Streicher, Fieldman of the
Classing and Market News Serv-
ice, has been in Hidalgo County
assisting cotton farmers to pre-
pare the applications for this free
service.
A list of gin communities whose
applications have been completed
are as follows:
Edcouch Gin company; Farmers
Coop Gin, San Juan; Lahoma Gin,
Stewart Farms; McCook Gin;
Planters Gin, McAllen; Planters
Gin Edinburg; J. P. Pealor Gin,

BORDERPATROL
MERCEDES — Eldon Taylor,
formerly cashier of the local Pig-
gly Wiggly, is now iii El Paso at-
tending the course of study given
to men training for Border Patrol
work. Arthur P. Hartzog of Ray-
mondville takes Taylor’s place as
cashier at the Piggly Wiggly Store
according to Joe Lambertson,
Manager.

ed from a vacation trip to Carls-
bad Friday evening.
Mr. and Mrs. Eric Green and
Jack Green, Gene Brown, Jr., and
Dude Wickline spent the week end
in San Antonio visiting Mrs. A. C.
Snodgrass who will leave this
week for Panama City to join her
husband.
Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Fikes and
daughters, Elma Ruth, Glen Jane
and Lilly Frances spent Sunday in
Corpds Christi.
Mr. and Mrs. Kent Jones and
baby daughter arrived Sunday to
visit their parents Mrs. Jennie V.
Jones and Mr. and Mrs. C. Bates.
Mrs. Ben Golden left Sunday to
spend several days with her son
and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Sylvan
Golden in San Antonio.
Mrs. Rogers Kelley of Austin
spent Sunday with her mother,
Mrs. Mary Morrow.
Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Dawson and
daughter, Miss Genevieve, have
returned from a pleasant vacation
trip that took them to many places
of interest, among which, was
Carlsbad Caverns, Me D o n a 1 d’s
Conservatory, and other sites.
Mrs. Earl Coles of Decatur, is
a guest here in the home of Dr.
and Mrs. M. R. Lawler.
Mrs. A. E. Branch attended a
guest day program in La Feria,
given by members of the Cultura
Club of that city. Mrs. E. C. Phil-
lips reviewed the book, “The Rose
Widow”.
Participants in a Mothers Day
dinner Sunday, held at the Reese--
Wil-Mond Hotel in Harlingen, in-
cluded a number of Mercedes Peo-
ple. They were Mr. and Mrs. H. T.
Stotler, Miss Helen Teal Stotler,
Mrs. Jennie Hearing and Mrs. Ef-
fie Hoffman.
From Harlingen were Mr. and
Mrs. Sig Gilbert of Harlingen,
formerly of Mercedes,, was a vis-
itor here Saturday.
Frank Duncan is serving on the
jury in Brownsville this week..
Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Anderson
of Houston, were guests here at
the weekend in the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Dewey Acker. The vis-
itor came to spend Mother’s Day
with Mrs. Anderson’s mother, Mrs.
Vada Acker, who is located with
her son, Dewey Acker.
Among out-of-town relatives
who were here over the week-end
to attend the funeral of Henry J.
Menton, were Mr. and Mrs. D. T.
Payne, Mrs. Dedie Collier and Miss
Maurine Haymes, all of Waco;
Thomas F. Menton of Beaumont,
and Mr. and Mrs. Menton Murray
and J. J. Murray, of Harlingen.
Miss Dora Hager, a student at
A. and I. College, Kingsville, spent
the week-end here with her par-
ents, Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Hager.
Mr. and Mrs. Lacy Smith of
Natalia, were week-end guests
here in the home of Mrs. O. F.
McLane and Mr. and Mrs. A. A.
Moore.
Mrs. Linton Acker returned the
first of the week from Corpus
Christi, where she visited her
daughter, Mrs. R. N. Cummings,
and family. Mr. and Mrs. Cum-
mings accompanied Mrs. Acker
home.

DEATH TAKES
H. J. MENTON
MERCEDES—Final rites were
held Sunday morning, 10:15 o’clock,
for Henry Joseph Menton, 53, who
died Friday at the Mercedes Gen-
eral Hospital after a prolonged
illnes.s Brief services were held
at the Stotler mortuary, followed
by more lengthy services at the
Lady of Mercy Catholic Church,
with Father Ryan in charge. He
was born in Belton.
Mr. Menton came to Mercedes
during its earliest days and had
long been active in civic affairs.
Coming to Mercedes in 1908, from
Hillsboro, hb eecame manager for
the J. H. Zachery Mercantile com-
pany, later, buying the firm. In
1909 he organized the Mercedes
Volunteer Fire Department, the
first such organization in the Val-
ley, and became fire chief. For the
past twenty years he has been in
the insurance business. For years
he was a member of the city
council.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs.
Jimmie Menton; brothers, L. J.,
Littlerock, Arkansas; T. L., Beau-
mont; L. F., Dallas, and W. C.
Washington, D. C.; sisters, Mrs. J.
J Murray, Harlingen, and Mrs.
Margaret Cage, Dallas.
Pallbearers were E. A. Brown,
Dr. J. G. Webb, R. E. Kirkpatrick,
H. T. Stotler, Mercedes, Dave
Payne of Waco, and Thomas Shock
of La Feria.
NEW PAPER WILL
BE OUT THURSDAY
MERCEDES — A new weekly,
owned and operated by Paul Netz
of Mercedes and Edcouch, will
make its first appearance Thurs-
day of this week. The new paper
will be a combination of Mercedes
and Edcouch news, and will still
be known as the Enterprise.
Mr. Netz is located in the Glover
building on Ohio Avenue.
Battalion Inspection
Scheduled for Friday
MERCEDES—Major J. B. Tay-
lor, commander of the 26th Bat-
talion, Texas Defense Guard,
which is composed of companies
from Mercedes, Harlingen, Ray-
mondville and Weslaco, announces
that the battalion will stand in-
spection for state recognition Fri-
day, May 23rd, in Harlingen.
Maj. E. E. Mockbee of Browns-
ville, state inspector and comman-
der of the 24th Battalion, Texas
Defense Guard, will be rpesent.
There will be complete assembly
of battalion for review and inspec-
tion at 8 p. m., on the Harlingen
High School football field. Com-
manding officers from the regular
army and reserve officers corps,
with prominent citizens, will be in
the reviewing stand as the troops
pass in review.
The citizenship of the Valley* is
cordially invited to witness this
demonstration and become ac-
quainted with the fine effort that
has resulted in the formation of
complete defense units, Maj. Tay-
lor stated.
Don E. Ransome of Weslaco, Cliff
Irons of Mercedes, have under-
gone major operations in the Mer-
cedes Hospital during the past
week.
Ike Lawler of La Feria, C. M.
Martin of Weslaco, Miss Zelda
Langford of Weslaco, were in the
Mercedes Hospital for medical aid.
A. L. Stroud, who underwent a
major operation in the local hos-
pital, has returned to his home
here.
