Parade opens festivities Friday
Llano County’s 51st Annual Rodeo
and Parade gets underway Friday at
4 p.m. when the parade, led by State
Representative Anne Cooper, who
will be parade marshal, winds jt§
way through downtown Llano and
around courthouse square.
The two-night stand of the rodeo,
sanctioned by the International
Professional Rodeo Association, will
start at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday
at the rodeo arena adjacent to the
Llano Community Center near City
Park and Llano Golf Club.
A host of activities will be happen-
ing this weekend as the Llano Boy
Scout Troop 301 will be sponsoring a
barbecue dinner on the lawn of the
Llano County Courthouse immedi-
ately following the parade Friday.
They will also set up a model
campsite and cook area.
Another highlight of the weekend
will be naming of the rodeo queen
and rodeo king from a host of entires
this year.
Top professional skydivers from
the Austin Parachute Team will be
performing between 7:30 and 8 p.m.
both evenings near the rodeo arena.
Rodeo
The rodeo has already received
pledges from many of the nation’s
top professional cowboys and cow-
girls who will be competing for a
share of the $17,000 payoff according
to David Meier, rodeo chairman.
Meier added that this year’s
sponsors are headed by Houston
Distributing and Budweiser, Coca
Cola and the event sponsors: bare-
back bronc riding, Llano Feed and
Supply; saddle bronc riding, Llano
National Bank; bull riding, David
Meier Construction Co. and calf
roping, Pinkie's Supermarket.
Also team roping. Farm Bureau
and Myrick Tire Co.;cowgirls' barrel
race, Ratliff Automobile Co.; steer
wrestling, Parisher Oil Co. and
money the hard way — a brand new
event is sponsored by Curb Service
Beer Barn. .
Rodeo fans will be able to see two
added events this year that should
prove exciting. ‘‘Money the hard
way" is where a bull is turned out in
the arena with a string around his
neck. Anyone over 18 who gets the
string off the bull’s neck will be paid
$75 per night, or if the bull keeps the
string on the first night, then it will
be worth $150 the second night.
Another favorite of rodeo fans is the
challenge of the champion bucking
bull "Bud Lite" at the Saturday
performance. The cowboy entered in
the bull riding that draws "Bud
Lite" will be paid a bonus from
Houston Distributing and Budweiser
of $100 if he makes a qualified eight
second ride; however if the bull
bucks him off, the bull’s owner.
Rafter D Rodeo Company of Ful-
shear, Texas will receive the bonus.
Llano rodeo will feature the world-
renowned team of Vicki and Brother
Taylor of Wimberley. Texas. The
Taylors will perform trick riding and
other various acts during the two
performance event. Brother will also
perform as the bull fighter during
the bull riding event. The Taylors
have worked rodeos from Mexico to
Canada. The Taylors are sponsored
by First Federal Savings and Loan.
Tickets will be on sale until
parade-time (4 p.m.) Friday at
Hasse’s, Llano Feed and Supply,

County Chamber of Commerce of-
fice.

County wants to talk first »f the week
School land improvements under question
Llano County Commissioners a-
greed Monday to take no action until
they can talk with Don Mobley or his
lawyer concerning a possible breach
of contract of Mobley Cattle Co.,
lessee of Llano County school land.
In a special, called meeting of the
Llano County Commissioners Court
Monday, a motion was unanimously
passed calling for County Judge Bill
Miller and commissioner Leonard
Crenwelge to go to San Angelo June
12 to visit with Mobley or his lawyer
concerning fees used for improve-
ments and lease payment money
withheld for further improvements
made by Mobley on the 17,388 acres
of land in Tom Green County just
north of San Angelo.
Llano County Attorney L.T. Des
Champs had advised the county back
In early February that the court's
action of using school money to pay
for ranch improvements could no
longer be accepted. Only taxes on
the land could be paid. If the county
wanted to pay for improvements, the
money would have to come out of the
general fund, according to Des
Champs.
Commissioners said they were
"reluctant” to go to court and tie up
the school land for an unestimated
period of time.

Llano Market Days begin
Beginning Saturday, June 6, 1987, and each Satruday thereafter,
everyone is invited to bring their produce to sell on Llano’s historic
courthouse square. So many of us have gardens that produce ;nore
than we care to eat or can and this is a great way to earn a little extra
money. Plus give others with not so green a thumb a chance to have
vine-ripened produce.
There is absolutely no charge to set up your vegetables'^* sale. If any
organization would care to have bake sales, this would be a great
opportunity. Also, several of the merchants on the square have advised
me they will be having sidewalk sales on these Saturdays. Remember,
beginning at 9 a.m. this Saturday, bring your green beans, squash or
whatever to "Market Days on the Square.”
Tornado victims need house items
Hospital picks
architect firm
Llano Memorial Hospital Board of
Governors didn’t have to take much
time to decide which architectural
firm would prepare the plans and
specifications for remodeling and
renovation of the hospital.
The called-meeting was held Thur-
sday, May 28 and the selection was
Cox and Croslin Architects of Austin.
Representing the firm and working
with the board will be Bob Cox.
Other architectural firms bidding
for the job were Mason and Easter of
Houston and Danzer and Davis of
Austin. A formal contract with Cox
will be approved in a called meeting
tentatively set for June 10 at the
hospital.
Weather
Household items wanted!
Llano’s Linda Halliburton had just
returned from Sarogosa where a
recent tornado devastated the small
community, killing 29 and injuring
more than a hundred people. Among
the group were seven of her personal
friends who died.
"There is a lot of help coming for
the people but the most urgent
things they need are household
items with which to set up housekee-
ping again." Linda said. "I used to
live nearby and know about 50
families there. They need such
things as pots and pans, dishes -
those basic things needed in a
home.”
The Sarogosa Relief Fund is being
used primarily for rebuilding and
there is apparently plenty of clothing
available.
"I plan to return to Sarogosa about
June 15." Linda said. "Please call
915/237-5883 if you would have
anything to contribute. I have a
storage building that can be used.”
Items will be boxed and transported
to Sarogosa by the Halliburtons.
Your help will be appreciated.
