Her personal and unit
sales for the year add up to
$414,933:
That was for the -
past campaign cycle, from
Aprit of2005 to April of 2006.
and it made her #1 in the
State of Texas.
The distinction earned her
a trip to Mexico where she
was honored by senior exec-
utives of Avon with a four-
day vacation that included
activities such as SCUBA,
sailing and golf
She joined 700 others on
a five-day four-night trip to
Cancun - a $1,500 value - as
a reward for being a compa-
ny superstar.
The two divisions are
President’s Council and
Inner Circle, which is the
highest honor.
Only 77 of the representa-
tives in the United States,
Puerto Rico and the
Caribbean have attained that
level.
Jackie said that to be one
of the top 77 in Avon is a
great honor.
Besides being tops in
sales in the State of Texas,
she also leads her division
which covers six other states
in the Coastal region.
Jackie, her husband Mike
and son Mick run the family
owned operation from three
locations: Beeville, Sinton
and Aransas Pass.
They are all three inde-
pendent Avon representa-
tives.
-Mick takes care of sales,
recruitment and leadership
in the Beevitte, Karnes City,
Three Rivers area. 1
Jackie and Mike focus on
the Sinton, Aransas Pass,
Coastal Bend area.
Jackie, a cancer survivor,
was honored with a Pink
Ribbon Award for her efforts
with the American Cancer
Society in a New York City
ceremony in 2001.
She continues to be
active in Sinton’s Relay for
Life every year and is a
member of the city’s 4A
Economic Development
Corporation.
While in Cancun, she was
one of those who met with
Avon’s corporate staff to talk
about products exposure. ^

In the past decade or so,
research has improved and
expanded the dietary choices of
people with diabetes. No longer
are they limited to the exchange
method of meal planning.
Recent focus has been on
carbohydrate counting. Because
starches and sugars carbohy-
drates account for most of the
glucose in the blood, especially
right after eating, many health
professionals believe, glucose
levels can be better controlled if
dietary carbohydrates are better
controlled.----
complications, focusing on and
controlling carbohydrate intake
can make a difference in blood
glucose lev^lsT
The more starches and sug-
ars carbohydrates you eat, the
harder it is to control blood glu-
cose.
Research has shown tfi©
amount of carbohydrates in
foods is more important than
what kinds of carbohydrates are
eaten. That means people with
diabetes can occasionally eat
For some, carbohydrate
counting can be easier to under-
stand than the exchange
method, and easier to apply to
the foods eaten every day. Meal
planning is more flexible, and
people with diabetes can even
have an occasional treat, provid-
ed they keep their glucose levels
in check.
In addition to counting carbo-
hydrates, people with diabetes
also benefit from controlling por-
tions. Both techniques are impor-
tant keys in planning meals and
controlling glucose levels.
Counting Carbs
Because carbohydrates affect
blood sugar levels more than
other foods, and because con-
trolling blood sugar levels helps
prevent the start of diabetes

AV THE ELECTRIC DELIVERY COMPANY that has been serving south and west Texas for over
90 years, AEP Texas knows a thing or two about energy conservation. While we no longer sell
electricity or send out monthly electric bills, we recognize this is going to be a long, hot summer.
Since AEP Texas and its 1,700 employees are directly connected to the many communities we
live in arid serve, we’d like to share some low or no cost tips with you on how to keep cooler this
summer by saving energy and money.
Set air-conditioning thermostats to the highest possible comfortable setting and dress accordingly.
Turn off every appliance you are not using including lights, televisions and
radios. Use the ‘‘sleep’' feature on your computer equipment
Only cool rooms that you use. Close vents and doors in unused roojns.
Be sure to close closet doors.
Check your air-conditioning filter every month and replace as needed.
Keep windows that let the sun in covered when the sun is shining on them.
Weather strip and caulk around windows add doors to prevent drafts.
# Close your fireplace damper when the fireplace is not being used.
1 ,
Use fans to help circulate the air in your house.
• Air-dry dishes in the dishwasher.
* Lower the temperature on your hot water heater to warm during the summer,
toko ohort showers end wash only full loads of clothes in the laundry.----
It’s important to remember that if you’re having trouble paying your electric bill, call your retail
energy provider (REP) at die number lilted on your current electric bfll to avoid disconnection.

sweets, as long as they count the
carbohydrates ip those sweets.
But remember: Sweets usually
also have a high fat content, and
so are more likely to provide
more empty calories” with less
nutrition than other foods.
Carbohydrates starches
and sugars such as those found
in pasta, beans, cereal, fruits,
rice, bread, vegetables, juices,
milk and other dairy products,
'and anything made with added
sugar such as cakes, candy and
pie are an important part of
nutrition. Counting carbohy-
drates can allow for variation in
foods eaten every day by pro-
viding a variety of choices. It can
also be used to match and adjust
insulin to food intake.
In order to count carbohy-
drates, you must know:
- How many grams of car-
bohydrates your body needs
each day;
- How many grams of car-
bohydrates are in different foods;
and
- How to use this process

in planning meals.
As a broad rule of thumb, -
about half of the daily calories :
should come from
carbohydrates. But because ..
everybody is different, individual .
carbohydrate needs will vary „
from person to person. To find
out how many grams of carbo-
hydrates you should eat each
day, work with your health care ,
professional, such as a dietitian
or certified diabetes educator. r
A gram is a unit of weight;
28 grams equal one ounce. ]
Because they are so small, they
can be used to measure carbo- \
hydrates accurately. ,
Once you know how many v
yiams uf carbohydrate you need
each day and when they should
be eaten you can plan your
meals and snacks accordingly.
To determine how many
grams of carbohydrate are in
specific foods, you can use sev-
eral methods. Read labels, if the
food has one, or read books and
other publications, visit Web
sites of diabetes organizations
and/or measure the foods on a
scale.
For an accurate carbohydrate
count, make sure portion sizes 1
are correct. To guesstimate por-
tion sizes especially when eat-
ing away from home let your
hand guide you. For instance,
your fist is about the same size
as a one-cup two ounces; a
palm is about three ounces; a 1
thumb is about one ounce; and a
thumb-tip is about a teaspoon. '
Portion Control '
One method of portion control
and carbohydrate counting is
called the plate method.
Visualize a'9-inch plate. At least
on?-halipf the plate should con-.
tain two servings of vegetables.
The other half of The pf£te fe
divided in two one is for a serving
of. bread, starch, vegetable or
grain, the other is for a serving of
meat or protein (about the size
of a deck of cards). In addition to
the food on the plate, you can
have one serving of a fat-free or
low-fat dairy product.
When planning menus, allow
for more vegetables and whole-
grain breads or cereals, and eat
smaller servings of meats, meat
substitutes, starches, fruits .and
low-fat milk. \
The plate method can ce-
handy when eating on a buffet
line. Mentally divide your plate in
half and proceed as before.
v Remember: Blood sugar lev-
els will rise about the same
amount whether you eat one
serving of milk, one serving of
starch or one serving of fruit.
People with diabetes don't j
usually need to follow special
menu plans or prepare special
foods. By watching portion sizes i
and counting carbohydrates,
they can eat the same foods their
families do.

ing with diabetes, plan to attend U
