Drugs That Help Fight High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure makes the heart work abnormally hard to pump
blood throughout your body. Things you can address to help lower your
blood pressure are weight control, reducing salt and alcohol intake, exer-
cise, and stress management. Obviously, other factors causing high blood
pressure such as race, heredity, and age cannot be controlled.
Drugs commonly used in today’s fight against high blood pressure
are cU*r*tics, or water pills. Typically, s diuretic such as hydrochlorothi-
azide will be the first line of treatment. Two fiunilies of drugs belong to the
second type of medication, ace inhibitors and angiotensin receptor
blockers (ARBs). Beta blockers, names ending in "-oiol" like metoproiol.
occupy the next class by working to slow the heart and thereby lowering
blood pressure. Just like any other muscle, when it works too hard your
heart can strain or Injure itself. A beta-blocker helps prevent these situa-
tions. Calcium channel blockers Include amlodipine and dlltkuem. These
drugs work by relaxing the smooth muscle around your blood vassals.
For the most part, these drugs are used after the others. Talk to your
pharmacist if you would like to know more about the drugs you are tak-
