standards were in place, 28 per-
cent of all Texas high school stu-
dents would not have received a
diploma.
“The bar is being raised and we
have to face the challenge,”
Jarrell said.
He also said that according to
the president’s “No Child Left
Behind,” program, students not
receiving a diploma because of
failing the TAKS could be taking
a fifth year of high school.
Janett said that his campus has
enacted math Mondays, manda-
tory tutorials for failing students,
math vertical alignment programs
and double-blocked schedules
for algebra in order to deal with
TAKS. Double blocked schedul-
ing means students will receive
90 minutes of math instruction
each day. He also said that hav-
ing a truant officer in place has
been beneficial.
“We can’t teach them if they
aren’t in class,” said Janett.
The next school board meeting
will be held at Packsaddle El-
ementary Monday, April 18 at 6
p.m. During that meeting it was
requested that the board revisit
the call for a bond election. Board
member Norm Long requested a
member of the state legislature
come to the meeting to report on
the affect of House Bill 3, which
deals with the future of school
finance.

HSB Police Chief Bill Lane
commended his officers and in-
vestigator for quickly clearing the
case and recovering all of the sto-
len property.
“Fortunately, residential break-
ins are rare in HSB and our suc-
cess with those cases which have
occurred has been very good,”
said Lane. “ I also commend
those citizens who were involved
in providing us with information
which led to the case being solved
and the suspects arrested."
