Woman’s Culture Club hears program on canals
The Woman’s Culture Club of
llano met for its regular meeting
on Monday, March 14 at its club
house on Sandstone Street.
The program was presented by
Gayle and Royce Hardaway,
Joanie and Harold Castleman,
Lila and Kenneth Force from Dal-
las. They showed slides and sou-
venirs of their trip to tour the ca-
nals of England owned by Brit-
ish Waterways.
They, along with Sylvia and Jim
Courier spent two weeks in Sep-
tember, 2003 on these barges
starting in the marina in
Manchester, England and boating
to Llongolon, Wales and back to
Manchester.
They traveled 170 miles and
went through 70 locks on the ca-
nals. Most of their lunches were
taken in quaint English villages
with beautiful churches and some
castles, while they cooked break-
fast and dinner on the barges with
Kenneth Force acting as resident
chef.
All the participants on the trip
agreed they were ready to go
again.
Following the English Canal
program, Joanie Castleman,
chairman of the membership
committee, presided over the in-
duction of new members. New
members are nominated by cur-
rent members of the club and then
voted on by all club members at
the February luncheon.
New members inducted for the
2005-06 club year were Kathleen
Love, who was introduced by
Nell Bauman; Jean Rostron, in-
troduced by Nelda Thompson;
Frances Young, introduced by
Martha Pereson; with Carole
Limmer, who could not be
present, being introduced by
Joanie Castleman. The new
members were presented with
long stem LaFrance Roses.
Refreshments were served by
hostesses Billie Laning, Paula
Graham, Madge Matthews, Alma
McCue, Martha Pearson, Mary
Smith and Julia Hilbun. The club
house was beautifully decorated
in a St. Patrick’s Day theme. Re-
freshments consisted of Key
Lime pie, green cream cheese fin-
ger sandwiches, mints and nuts
with green punch and coffee.
The Scholarship Fund prize
was a beautiful perpetual calen-
dar donated by Judye Stewart and
was won by Lila Foree, the guest
who helped present the English
Canal Program.
Chances on winning the door
prize tie told to qnyone attend-
ing the meeting for $1 each and
the proceeds are then added to the
Scholarship Fund, dial is awarded
to a deserving Llano High School
senior each year.
Billie Laning corresponding
secretary, read a letter from
Lucile Larremore, a former mem-
ber who helped establish the
Scholarship Fund. Lucile has
moved to the Houston area but
still keeps in touch with her
friends in Llano.
Mary Ruth Wallis, chairman of
the Community Service Commit-
tee, accepted donations to New
Horizons, an emergency assis-
tance organization. Mary Ruth
also reminded the club that they
are to hostess the birthday party
for the Hill Country Nursing
Home on April 28 and they are
to provide refreshments for the
Relay for Life survivors on April
29-30.
She is still accepting donations
for the on-going projects of
magazines for the nursing homes,
the hospital and the clinic as well
as donations for the Llano County
Food Pantry.
Following a short business
meeting, the ladies adjourned by
reciting the Club Collect which
was led by Bettye Miller.
