Clara Kuhrik from Baytown mi
a visitor over the wariwnd at the
homa of her eon John, and grandMO
Just Robinhawk. She made a
special trip to Alto,to see the
Wilcox syrup mill in operation for
the last time.
I was there Saturday morning
two different times and the crowds
were so enthusiastic. And people
had come from all over east Texas
to see syrup bring made the “old
time way." In line to get a half
gallon can, the lady in front of me
was from Spring and the man
behind me was from League City.
Local folks in the hospital recen-
tly are Herman L. Smith, James L.
Bennett and Grady P. Maynard.
L. B. Mason is in Cherokee Coun-
ty Medical Center in Rusk with
pneumonia and heart trouble. He is
in Room 56B and feeling well
enough to have visitors.
Jay Williams had his 22nd birth-
day Monday but had to celebrate
away from home at Austin College
in Sherman.
Mamie Lee Carter is home from
the hospital and on the mend. She
was staying with Peaches and the
grandchildren last week but is in
her own home now and ready to
have lots of visitors to cheer her up.
Sht is the tody who spent tt years
on the staff ofthe Herald
Git Well wishes to all the folks
around town who are suffering from
the "Bug". A lot of students and
staff from school have boon out
lately with illness.
If it is any consolation, a preos
release from the American Lung
Association mid that Americana
are expected to suffer about 78
million bouts of flu in 1966 and 78
million episodes of the common
cold before this year's holiday
season is ended. If you would like
more information on lunch disease,
call the American Lung Association
of Texas toll-free at 1-800-252-5864.
Another toll-free number to call
for information is the Cancer In-
formation Service of the University
of Texas M.D. Anderson Hospital
and Tumor Institute. That number
is 1-800-4224237 and it may come in
especially handy this week as we
celebrate The Great American
Smoke Out. Counselors can provide
callers with a variety of
publications about cigarettes,
pipes, cigars, smokeless tobaccos
and nicotine gum, as well as infor-
mation and referrals about
smoking cessation from trained
smoking counselors.

Everyone is always concerned
when extremely bad weather oc-
curs overnight and whether or not
we will have school. I hope that this
information will be helpful.
We, at Alto I.S.D., try to keep the
parents and public informed of
events well in advance. Of course,
that’s not possible when overnight
conditions occur.
Several factors determine what
bad enough weather is to close
down school. These are icy or im-
passable roads, extreme cold, loss
of heat in bindings and weather
predictions.
We are fortunate here in that the
city owns the gas lines and this is
not usually a problem to us as in
other districts.
If any or all of these factors occur
overnight, we will decide as early
as possible about closing school. We
have to make a decision by 6:30
a.m. in order to inform the bus
drivers and to announce it over the
area media.
