Places In Sixth Annual Competition At Louisiana Tech
By APRIL LAWLES
Alto Band traveled four and a half
hours by school bus in the wee hours
of Saturday, Nov. 1 to experience
the thrill of the Louisiana Tech
Marching Band Classic.
The sixth annual competition was
hosted by the mighty La Tech band
which proudly boasts 200 members.
Alto band marched first in the
Small Band category. We were
amazed at the size and excellence
of many of the “small” bands!
Alto band placed sixth out of ten
competitors in our class, with an
overall number two rating. Drum
majorette Leslie Davis and Senior
trumpeter Terrell Martin were both
one point away from Superior
ratings Band director Jon Lawles
was pleased with the pride, con-
sistency, and effort displayed by

Alto was cheered on by one of the
best pep squads in the stadium
How could it be otherwise with our
loyal bus drivers, “band-aide”
moms, fifty-four band members-in-
training, and Maurice?!!!
The Tech trip really started
Friday on most band members’
calendars. Halloween morning
dawned warm and beautiful as
band members enjoyed an
anything-but-typical Friday
Halloween hi-jinks followed with
perfect weather, an exciting game,
and more mischief. Hiliary
Cavalier helped two band-aides put
together 100 band booster ban-
dages for the next morning’s trip
Being dropped off at home near
midnight, she found spooks had
toilet-papered the yard with skill.
Lawles’ yard was “hit” once
Thursdy night, and twice Friday
night. Available for comment, the
band director had these words to
say, “The quality of toilet paper
was A, but the quality of the job was
a C-plus.”
Saturday morning began for the
director at 3:30 a.m when the
alarm clock was thrown against the
wall, never to be heard from again.
The Mean Stmg»drum Ihi* left at
4:30 to travel to Tech for their drum
line clinic. MV. DaflfCls dVoVe an en-
thusiastic and sleepy group out of
Alto city limits an hour before the
band itself pulled out
The clinic was a marvelous
demonstration of excellence in
technique. It was directed by two of
the seven-member staff of the Tech
“Pride” band The 19 member
drum line demonstrated difficult
rhythm sequences played together,
cleanly, at terrific speeds We were
“wowed” with their expertise and
spirit! It was an exciting beginning
to a good day
The Alto drum line then joined the
Mean Sting Band and its 54 suppor-
ters in the Tech Stadium to
thoroughly enjoy a full day of
pageantry and showmanship ' The
competition ended at 4:30 p in with
the landing of a huge hot-air
balloon, and an outstanding per-
formance of corps-style excellence
by the La. Tech “Pride” band
Trophies as tall as the drum-majors
were awarded to the best groups
amid thunderous applause.
Our three buses joined eleven
others at the local McGag’s
restaurant for a quick bite before
the long return journey. “A
valuable exprience for all concer-
ned, and a wonderful day,” Lawles
commented as he unwrapped the
toilet paper from his car in the
school parking lot, with Maurice
snoring loudly.
