THE COTULLA RECORD
COTULLA, TEXAS
FRIDAY. MAY 20. 1940
LAR(>E FLAX CROP
PLANTED IN TEXAS
FOR 1949 SEASON
price, basis Minneapolis, for the
1949 crop has been set by the U. S.
Department of Agriculture at 90
per cent of the farm parity price
Latest reports indicate that 277,- as of April 1. The exact price W>U
000 acres of flax have been planted be annnonced later, but it is esti-
in Texas this season. The support j mated that it should be about $4.00
per bushel for Grade No. 1 flax-
seed. Corpus Christi and Houston,
Texas, were designated as base points.
The support price will be 30 cents
per bushel under Minneapolis at these
points.
Due to the warm humid climate of
South Texas, no farm storage loans
will be made. Instead arrangements
no doubt will be made to buy flax-
seed if the commercial price falls be-
low the support price.

14-Year Old Heroine
Presented With New
'Dream Home"
CHICAGO.—More than 2,000 per-
sons witnessed the dedication of a
new $18,000 “dream” home for
Roberta Lee Mason, 14-year-old
heroine who saved the lives of her
four younger brothers and sisters
when fire destroyed their former
home three miles southeast of Des
Plaines, 111., Feb. 17.
After the dedication, about 40,-
000 people from cars strung out
along the highway visited the
home.
A message from Matthew J. Con-
nally, secretary to the President,
asserting that Mr. Truman “is de-
lighted to send greetings to Rober-
ta on this happy occasion” was
read.
Another message from Secretary
of Labor Maurice J. Tobin “com-
mended not only Miss Mason for
her outstanding act of heroism but
also labor, management and pri-
vate citizen--- for their unselfish ef-
forts in making a dream literally
come true. It was a great act of
brotherliness and neighborliness.”
Money for the home was donated
by well wishers and the labor was
contributed b y building trades
unions.
Roberta was taken to the scene
from the Cook county hospital, | ' ---
where she is recovering from |
severe burns.
With shiny scissors, she cut a
blue ribbon which had been
stretched around the house. Then
she received a gold key from
Michael Sexton, president of the
Chicago district council of car-
penters.
On •) rostrum outside the house
was a forty-piece band supplied
by the Chicago federation of mu-
sicians. Speakers included State’s
attorney John S. Boyle, Richard
J. Daley, state finance director,
and Mayor Martin H. Kennelly.
Except to cut the ribbon and i
receive the key, Roberta stayed in- j
side the house, with her mother,
Mildred, her step-father, Walter,
and the children she saved—Leroy,
2; Rosemary, 10; Henry, 8, and
Ruth, 6.
Roberta later returned to the hos- :
pital to remain two weeks more.
In addition to the home and ,
more than $IO,OCO worth of furnish- ;
ings, a cash fund totalling $12,000 ,
has been contributed.
Members of the Chicago building ]
trades union completed the house
in three weeks.
