Dies at 100
‘Grandma’ Janzen
Schulenburg. — Funeral ser-
vices for Anna Fiedler Janzen,
probably Fayette County’s old-
est citizen, were held in Schu-
lenburg Tuesday, Dec. 22.
Known to her friends
throughout South Texas as
Grandma Janzen, she achieved
the ambition of her life when
she celebrated her 100th birth-
day on December 2. At the time
she said, “I am satisfied now,
I think this will be my last
birthday.”
Born in Fayette County in
1853, she moved with her par-
ents to the High Hill commu-
nity near Schulenburg while
she was still an infant. She had
vivid memories of the Civil
War.
She died Sunday night after
a three-day attack of influen-
za. Her health had been failing
for the last three months. Up
until that time, however, she
was in excellent health, shar-
ing household duties with the
two sons with whom she lived
on a farm.
Although she had become
hard of hearing in recent years,
she still retained most of her
teeth. Her favorite form of rel-
axation was to sit on the front
porch in a rocking chair and
smoke a clay pipe.
Her husband, Frederich Jan-
zen, died in 1935 at the age of
88. She was the mother of 11
children, eight of whom pre-
ceded her in death. Surviving
are the two sons with whom
she lived, Fred Janzen and Hen-
ry Janzen, and a daughter, Mrs.
Charles Miller of Moulton. Six
grandchildren and three great-
grandchildren, one half-sister
also survive.
Burial was in old High Hill
Cemetery. The Rev. William C.
Anderson, pastor of St. Paul’s
Evangelical and Reformed
Church officiating.
Casket attendants were Geo.
Fiedler, Shiner; Herman Ber-
ger, Houston; Rudolf Fiedler,
High Hill; Albert Henning, Ep-
ton and Henry Fiedler, Schul-
enburg.

Lavaca Court
Hires Deputy
-o-x-o-
Hallettsville. — The Com-
missioners’ Court has authoriz-
ed Sheriff Theo Long to hire
one more deputy at a salary not
to exceed $240 per month.
The Court, approving the ad-
ditional deputy, noted that such
a move was necessary if the
police radio which was recent-
ly installed in the sheriff’s of-
fice, was to be put to it’s max-
imum use in serving the people
of Lavaca County, and parti-
cularly to cooperate with the
Highway Patrol.
The radio has been in opera-
tion during the evening hours
very little since its installation
since the sheriff has only one
deputy. But with the ne\v de-
puty, it is expected the station
will be in operation possibly all
day each week with night ser-
vice during weekends and holi-
days.
