powder marks on him before-

As best we can tell, the Peach
Creek Philosopher on his John-
son grass farm on Rt. 3, Shiner,
has the Christmas spirit this
week.

Dear editar:
I was talking with a man the
other day. I won’t call his name
because even if we have got
freedom of the press I don’t like
to be horse-whipped, and he
was muttering about how much
trouble Christmas is.
“Just not worth the effort,”
he complained. “All this run-
nin around, try in to buy every-
body a present you figure is
gonna buy you one, tryin to
gauge just about what price
range they’ll be in so you don’t
over-do the thing. I tell you,
we ought to call the whole
him. neart. vv ____________ ~ --- ------

In the holy spirit of the true Christmas, with the warmth
and benevolence of His Day — we say to all our many
friends — May your holiday be rich with many blessings!

thing off.”
I do not look at it that way.
I go on the the-
ory that if eve-
rybody buys
else a Christ-
everybody
mas present,
the amount of
cheer is about
the same as it
was before we started so the
thing for some of us to do is to
hold back and stay on the re-
ceivin end exclusively, so the
total amount of cheer can be
increased. I’m in favor of send-
in Christmas presents all right,
but at the same time I recognize
some of us have a duty to keep
our arms open so the senders
have a chance to achieve their
aim. I don’t intend to be a kill-
joy.
It’s the same thing on the
national level or the interna-
tional level. If a man runnin
for office didn’t have somebody
who needed helpin, he wouldn’t
have enough planks in his plat-
form to stand on, and vrey few
candidates could think of any
reason for runnin. If every na-
tion in the world suddenly in-
formed the United States every-
thing in their countries was in
fine shape and they wouldn’t
be needin any more help, this
nation would be as lonesome as
a country dog when the folks
have all gone visitin.
As far as I’m concerned*
Christmas is a fine institution
and I’m in favor of more of em.
Maybe not too close together,
but the idea of abolishin em al-
together is ridiculous.
Maybe giving is sometimes
overdone, especially for the
people who’ve already got near-
ly everything they need, but
the idea of giving is sound and
we don’t want to do anything
to discourage it.
I just want to say I sure have
enjoyed writin for The Shiner
Gazette this year and while it
was a sacrifice lots of times to
be sittin leanin against a tree
with a pencil and tablet when
I could have been on my trac-
tor goin up one row and down
another addin to the surplus,
enlightenment has to keep pace
with material progress and a
pencil is easier to sharpen than
a plow point.
Merry Christmas to you and
all your readers.
Yours faithfully,
J. A.
