ping from the curb.
“The traffic officer is sort of
a middleman in this whole pic-
ture,” he said. “He’s got to bring
order out of this traffic chaos.
He must persuade walkers to
stay on the curb until it’s safe
to cross, keep addled motorists
from snarling up traffic, and
answer all sorts of sensible and
senseless questions into the bar-
gain. Walkers and drivers
should give themselves and the
traffic officers a break this
Christmas by staying alert and
alive in traffic.”

Burglars, safe blowers and
narcotic fiends were abroad in
southwest Texas during the past
week.
In Flatonia Monday night
burglars broke into Jones Drug
Store, blew the door off a safe
and escaped with money and
narcotics from the safe.

An overhead valve V-8 engine developing 161 horsepower, a new
type ball-joint front suspension and improved body styling are the major
features of the 1954 Mercury. A new four-barrel carburetor has been
incorporated for rapid acceleration and economical operation. A longer
exterior appearance has been achieved by an extension to the rear
quarter panel, new treatment of the side moulding and a more massive
and distinctive front end grille assembly. A new instrument panel and
more luxurious interior trims have been included. Shown here is
four-door Mercury Monterey sedan.

owner or the T<
store, stated that approximately S£
$160.00 in cash and an estim-
ated $40.00 worth of narcotics ce
were taken. By far the greatest th
loss suffered, however, was in Ti
damage to the steel safe and to to
bottled drugs stored nearby. dc
Entrance to the building was he
gained by forcing the heavy bl
north doors, breaking glass and ge
unlocking another door. Ap- to
parently the intruders first
knocked a hole into the safe’s!
closing mechanism, inserted a gr
charge of nitro-glycerin, then
went back outside, from where
the charge was set off. A long ^
wire was found in the alley, £
apparently used to activate the i ^
explosive. ^
The heavy door of the safe
was blown to bits and a hole
was ripped into the wall of the
adjoining building occupied by le
the City Cafe. A tear gas bomb, is
kept in the safe, was exploded si
by the charge, and it is thought ai
possible this bomb was respon- tr
sible for no further ransacking se
of the store taking place. es
