Later we read in the dispatches
which were carried in newspapers
throughout the land that Art had
received a contract calling for
>11,000, and that the young man
wanted $15,000, and would not
sign unless he got the $15,000.
Studying the situation from every
angle, we said in this column that
$11,000 was not to be sneezed at—
that Art may be worth a little
' More than that as a drawing card,
but not as a baseball player. Pres-
ident C. R. Turner of the Waco
club stated that Art should sign
at that figure, but lo, we’ now
learn that Art has not been offered
$11,000, or anything close to that
amount, and that he is holding out
for $10,000
$15,000.

Shires could not loaf in the field, *
and get by with it. That is too
plain, and the manager has the
privilege of benching and fining
his loafing players. A manager
could hardly discipline a player
by fining him, because that player
did not happen to" be hitting. The
player would have to be sold or

Disch threatened to resign unless
Walker was fired. Littlefield
made no such threat, realizing,
perhaps, that no one would care
much if he did resign. Now if
Walker has to be fired in order
that Disch and Littlefield might
have harmony, how is the council
to know that harmony will pre-

We have far more respect for the
board of regents of the University of
Texas regarding their attitude toward
athletics at this time than ever be-
fore. Our respect was increased by
the following dispatch carried in the
afternoon newspapers of yesterday:
“.Dismissal of the entire athletic
staff - at the university is threatened
by the board of regents, unless har-
mony is achieved, the Daily Lexan,
student publication of the University
of -S'exas, says today. The Texan
gives an accomrt -what it alleges oc-
curred at the meeting of university
regents here last Saturday. Regent
R. L. Holliday of El Paso called for
resignation of L. Theo. Bellmont, pro-
fessor of education, the Texan says.
A counter proposal was made that all
the coaching staff as well be called
upon to resign. Holliday then with-
drew his motion. W. M. Odell of
Fort Wbrth was made chairman of a
committee to investigate the athletic
department.”

delightfully spent, a number of friends
calling during the afternoon to offer
congratulations and best wishes to the
venerable libstess, who was also the
recipient of numerous gifts.
