Fire commissioners set tax
levys in the district and contract
with rural fire departments for
fire protection in their district.
In addition to the reappoint-
ments, the county commissioners
OK’d an application to the Texas
Forest Service ioi tae use of an
all-terrain vehicle to combat
grass and forest fires.
The vehicle, which would be
available to the county at no cost,
is equipped with pumps and fire-
fighting apparatus and would be
stored in Hardin.
Commissioner Payne said the
vehicle would significantly help
rural firefighters stave off grass
fires from spreading into residen-
tial areas.
“If they have this vehicle to get
there and cut off a fire from these
situations, it is a tremendous
help,” he said.
Payne said the vehicle could
also service Chambers County.
Liberty County Fire Marshall
said the application should be
approved within the next two
weeks.
