Dell Valley -"An Evening of Music", piano recital presented
by music teachers Mrs. Wilton Green and Mrs. Claymon Mc-
Cutcheon was very well received by a large turnout on Tuesday
evening.at the Methodist Church. Front row, 1 to r - Patricia
Hervella, Mary 7iler, Mrs. Wilton Green; second row, Barbara
ellinger, Roycee Monk, Anne Lynch; third row, Carla Mc-
Cutcheon, Shelley Brownfield, Joy and Donna Casey; Back row,
Peggy Lynch and Mrs. Claymon McCutcheon.
One year following its initial indictment of the cigarette, the
Public Health Service issued a publication describing smoking as
"one of the greatest health hazards of this century. "
It reported impressive statistics on chronic bronchitis, emphysema,
heart disease-- as well as cancer. Americans stopped, looked,
listened — and smoked away.
Last October the American Cancer Society started a drive to con-
vince smokers that they can restore to health some pre-cancerous
lung tissue if they will give up cigarettes. There is no measurable
evidence that many did.
Veterans' Administration re-
search, October of last ye<r,
showed a "much higher degree
of hardening of the arteries a-
mong cigarette smokers. "
September, 1965, the U. N.
World Health Organization re-
ported an "alarming increase in
deaths from lung cancer, "world-
wide. The report blamed cigar-
ettes for a 60 percent increase
in the United States, a 55 per-
cent increase in Canada.
Johns Hopkins research reveals
that "women who smoke are
more likely to have premature
babies" and "premature birth is
a leading cause of mental retar-
dation. "
October, 1965, research spon-
sored by the American College
of Surgeons revealed that "the
baoies or women who smoke enter the world prematurely three times
more often. . . "
And 60, 000 babies die every year as a result of prematurity. So,
says the American Cancer Society, another 50, 000 Americans will
die this year of lung cancer. And "probably 75 percent of all these
cases will be traceable to smoking."
Another 60, 000 will die of emphysema, and more than 90 percent
of those will be heavy smokers or former heavy smokers.
The American Eb ntal Association, April, 1965, Announced new
evidence liking smoking with cancer of the throat and mouth.
President Maynard Hines of the American Dental Association says
cigarette smokers who switch to cigars or pipes are fooling them-
selves.
The increased odds of oral cancer remain; the chances of lip can-
cer increase. Meanwhile, Americans protest the "high cost of hos-
pital care. " Americans demand that their government share the
"high cost of hospital care. "
Yet Americans continue willingly to spend more money for to-
bacco than they spend for hospital care.
Lastyear the United States Public Health Service found that "half
of the persons who complete courses in "stop-smoking clinics' go
back to cigarettes within six months. "
Warnings do not seem to afford a solution to the problem. The
warning that, "Tobacco is a substance loathsome to the sight, disa-
greeable to the smell, noxious to the brain and injurious to the lungs
was issued by King James I of England three-hundred-a nd-sixty-some
years ago.
Nobody paid any attention to him, either.
REPRESENTATIVE GERALD
FORD of Michigan wants Con-
gress to investigate Unidenti-
fied Flying Objects. A lot of
people in his state sighted ”
UFO's last month and some of
them were put out by the way
a PhD from Ann Arbor treated
their stories. He said what they
saw was a swamp gas.
We don't blame the Michiga- »
riders for getting sore at this,
but why start Congress medd-
ling with flying saucers?Doesnlt
it have enough to worry about
on Earth without snooping into
the doings of Moonlings, Mar-
tians, Venusians or whatever
the things are that are trying
so hopefully to communicate
with us?
Besides, instead of investiga-
ting flying saucers, Congress
would start investigating the peo-
ple who have seen them. And
people who have seen them are
intimidated enough as it is.
Take Lonnie Zamora, for in-
stance . Zamora is a policeman
in Socorro, New Mexico, and
last year about this time he saw
a flying saucer or, as he prefers
to call it, a UFO.
Cruising one evening in his
patrol car south of the town, he
rounded a lonely hill - and there
the thing was. Egg-shaped, he
described it, and with three legs
and manned by two small white
figures. Even as he stared at it
frozen awe, the object left the
ground and took off.
Likewise, Mr. Zamora. His
story received a mixed recep-
tion in Socorro, with skeptics
in the majority;some of the la-
tter even went so far as to hint
Mr. Zamora might have had a
drop too much at the local ta-
vern.
An investigator from North-
western University was shown
the spot where whatever-it-was
had landed; marks were still
visible which Zamora said had
been left by the landing gear
and there was a scorched place
which he thought had been cau-
sed by the object's exhaust.
But nothing came of all this
except a lot of unwelcome pub-
licity for Mr. Zamora. Inter-
viewed again since the recent
sightings he said he sympathi-
zes with Michigan residents,
whose reports were met with ri-
dicule and skeptidan,but asfar.'
as his personal UFO is concern-
ed, he only wants to forget the
whole thing.
