Loredo Ill and Jacob Shafer.
■ 1 here are about half a dozen
poems and short stories from
the novel-sized magazine,
with authors ranging in age
from 15 to 50 years old.
"We want people to be
aware that there’s a place for
them to share their thoughts
and ideas,” Loredo said. “It’s
a cultural outlet.”
The magazine means
“cycle” in Spanish, and
Loredo said he wants the
magazine to focus on the evo-
lution of cultures and places
over time. The neighborhood
around Bergeron Park, for
example, used to be predomi-
nantly white instead of
Hispanic. "There’s different
people, but there’s still that
brotherly feeling,” Loredo
said. He hopes to include
photography and written
works from high school and
college students in future
issues.
Also at the event were food
vendors and live musical
entertainment from local
bands such as the Cabrales
family, Detour South, The
Beaners and Los Quatro
Rivales.
Non-profit organizations
such as the New Horizon
Family Center and the DARE
program were also available to
distribute information.
Baytown resident Susan
Aviles sold clothes and videos
underneath the shade of a tree
at one comer of the festival.
Aviles participates at the festi-
val every year because she
said she makes a good profit,
but this year she especially
liked the music. “The festival
really has a community feel,”
Aviles said.
Families also flocked to the
Heritage Scaritage festival at
the Republic of Texas Plaza
Park, 5117 North Main, where
the main attractions were the
Brown-McKay House and the
Wooster Common School.
Children’s rooms tour guide
Rosemarie Thompson said she
could imagine the peaceful-
ness living inside a house
without electrical appliances
such as a television or a
refrigerator. “I could see the
mom sitting in the rocking
chair reading a bedtime story
or the children running up and
down the stairs,” she said.
It was the first time the Bay
Area Heritage Society show-
cased the second floor of the
Brown-McKay House. Future
projects include installing a
handicap ramp on the first
floor of the house and adding
a concrete mule troth outside.
Some visitors were already
familiar with the Wooster
Commons School.
Siblings Amberly and
Austyn Richard differed in
their opinion about the
Wooster Common School. “I
wouldn’t go here,” Austyn, 12,
said. “There’s no air-condi-
tioning.” However, his sister
did not mind the lack of elec-
tricity at all. “I would love to
go to school here,” she said.
“I’m pretty much country.”
Baytown resident Melanie
Workman said she already
toured the school before as a
teacher at Horace Mann
Junior School, but she wanted
to bring her family to enjoy
the festival’s activities.
Workman said she could not
imagine being a teacher at
that period. “There’s no AC
and all the grades are in one
room—fliat would be hard,”
she said.
Next to the Wooster school
was a Sioux tepee replica,
which was large enough to fit
eight people. Workman’s
daughter, Courtney, 11,
earned her mud stripes after
playing a Sioux hunting game
where.she had to run and
catch a hoop before it hit the
ground.
History lessons were also
given at the Highlands
Jamboree, where the
Highlands Heritage Museum
showed “Living History in
Film” inside the Highlands
Elementary School gymnasi-
um, 200 E. Wallisville Road.
