Leland Holland
Funeral services for
Mr. Leland R. Holland, 84
of the Del Ray
Community in Panola
County, were held at 2
p.m. Friday, November
14, 2008 at First United
Methodist Church in
Carthage with his sons,
Steve, Tim, and Terry
Holland and Reverend
Rick Shepherd officiating
under the direction of
Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral
Home. A graveside serv-
ice with full military hon-
ors followed in Walton
Cemetery under the aus-
pices of the V.F.W. Post #
4002, Longview. The fam-
ily received friends from 5
until 7 p.m. on Thursday
at the funeral home. Mr.
Holland went to be with
his Lord and Savior, Jesus
Christ, on Wednesday
morning, November 12,
2008 in Carthage.
Leland R. Holland was
born May 5, 1924 in
Fairplay to Mordie and
Lois Allison Holland. Mr.
Holland was a lifetime
farmer and rancher in
Panola County. He was
known for his expertise in
hay forage production,
and was often consulted
by ranchers seeking his
advice. He was also a
building contractor for
over 20 years, building
numerous homes in the
East Texas area. Leland
served his country honor-
ably in the U.S. Navy
from 1944-1946. He
served as Sunday school
superintendent at
Ebenezer United
Methodist Church for 40
years. He was a longtime
4-H leader and member of
the Panola County Junior
Livestock Committee. He
served on the Panola
County A.S.C.S. board for
several years and was
president of BUILD
EAST TEXAS in 1983.
He served on the board of
education for the Carthage
I.S.D. from 1973-1983.
He was a three time presi-
dent of the Panola County
Cattleman’s Assn. Mr.
Holland was instrumental
in the planning and con-
struction of the new state
of the art Carthage High
School, as well as the
Panola County Youth
Expo Center. He was pre-
sented the Panola County
producer of the year
award in 2000 by the U.S.
Dept, of Agriculture and
the Bill Clements
Memorial Award for out-
standing leadership in
agriculture in 2001 by
BUILD EAST TEXAS.
Mt Holland is survived
by*his wife of 66 years,
June Holland; three sons,
Steve and wife Cindy, Tim
and wife Sue of
Shreveport, and Terry and
wife Debbie Jo; one
brother Bill of Henderson;
six grandchildren, Jodie,
Josh and wife Stacey,
Jason and wife Kristin of
Rogers, Ark., David and
Matt of Shreveport, and
Khakie Jo. Mr. Holland is
also survived by Steve and
Cindy’s adopted daughter,
Rosa and her daughter
Devin and numerous
nieces and nephews.
Serving as pallbearers
were Mr. Holland’s grand-
children.

Jr.

Robert Matthew Miller,
Jr., 82 of Carthage, will be
held at 2 p.m. Saturday,
November 15, 2008 at
Restland Memorial Park
with Reverend Billy
Shoffner and Reverend
Aaron Bequette officiat-
ing. Services are under the
direction of Hawthorn
Funeral Home. Mr. Miller
died Tuesday, November
12, 2008 at his home in
Carthage.
Mr. Robert Matthew
Miller, Jr. was born
January 30, 1926 in
Witchita Falls. He was
one of four children bom
to the marriage of Robert
Matthew and Pearl
Hughes Miller, Sr. Robert
married Helen Gertrude
Chandler in 1945. He
enlisted to serve his coun-
try during WWII in the
U.S. Army. His active
duty service included
serving in the Battle of the
Bulge, where he received
both the Purple Heart and
Bronze Star. Mr. Miller
worked as a truck driver,
later working in the
cement industry for
Witchita Falls Sand and
Gravel and ended working
for Express Ready Mix in
Shreveport. He was a
member of the Loyal
Order of the Moose Lodge
in Shreveport, the V.F.W.
Lodge in both Shreveport
and Carthage and a mem-
ber of Northside Christian
Center, in Carthage. He
was a loving man placing
God, his Country and
family above all else. He
is preceded in death by his
wife of 56 years Helen G.
Chandler Miller; daughter
Mary Lou Miller; step-
daughter Loretta Mauldin;
great-grandson Jacob
Matthew Doyle; and sib-
lings Irene Chumley,
Mildred Clements and
Charlie Miller.
Survivors include son
Roy Miller and wife
Carol, of Shreveport;
daughter Helen Miller, of
Carthage; grandchildren
Robert Miller and wife
Ashley, of Ashland, Ohio,
Ann Marie Frost and hus-
band James, of Signal
Mountain, TN, Melissa
Bequette and husband
Reverend Aaron, of
Carthage, Sherrie Lee
Mauldin, of NC, Angie
Lance and husband Cory,
of Haughton, and Mike
Mauldin, of Shreveport;
great-grandchildren
Brooke Kennedy, Robert
William Miller, Ian
Christopher Miller, Callie
Doyle, Sarah Bequette
and Andrew Bequette;
numerous nephews,
nieces, cousins and a host
of friends.
Honorary pallbearers

from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday,
November 14, 2008 at
Hawthorn Funeral Home.

Elsie Jean Turner, 70 of
Carthage, were held at 10
a.m. Friday, November
14, 2008 at the Hawthorn
Funeral Home Chapel
with Reverend Don
Cocklin officiating.
Interment followed at Odd
Fellows Cemetery under
the direction of Hawthorn
Funeral Home. Mrs.
Turner died November 12,
2008 in Longview.
Mrs. Elsie Jean Turner
was bom August 22, 1938
in Corpus Christi, to the
marriage of John and
Bonnie Jean Holder Reed.
As an only child, Jean was
raised, schooled and
attended college in
Corpus Christi. She met
Jimmy Turner and they
married on June 28, 1957
and celebrated 51 years of
marriage in a loving,
Christian home. Mrs.
Turner worked 28 years as
a Lab Tech for Dr. John,
Dr. Gerardy and Dr.
Cooper. Jean loved the
outdoors, where she
enjoyed tending to ani-
mals and her horses. She
was a long time member
of the First Christian
Church, of Carthage. Mrs.
Turner is preceded in
death by her parents.
Survivors include
devoted husband Jimmy
Turner, of Carthage; son
Randall Turner, of
Carthage; daughters
Gayle Stevenson and hus-
band Tim, and Joann
Turner; grandchildren
Adam Turner, Andrew
Weaverty, Ann Marie
Turner, Jesse McKelvey,
Mysti Bradshaw, Michael
and Brooke Cureton;
great-grandchildren Ryan
McKelvey and Mia
Bradshaw.

Funeral services for
Mr. L. E. McMellon, 81 of
Carthage, will be held at 2
p.m. on Saturday,
November 15, 2008, at
Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral
Home Chapel with
Reverend Mervin Scott
and Pastor Betty Wills
officiating. Interment will
follow in Adams
Cemetery. The family
received friends from 6
until 8 p.m. on Friday at
the funeral home. Mr.
McMellon passed away
on Wednesday morning,
November 12, 2008 at his
home in Carthage.
Lewis Eddie Glenn
McMellon was born
October 30, 1927 in the
Galloway Community of
Panola County, to Lewis
Theodore and Eunice
Irene Creech McMellon.
Mr. McMellon graduated
from Logansport High
School. He served his
country in the U.S. Navy
from 1944-1946 and was
honorably discharged. Mr.
McMellon went to work
for Phillips Petroleum in
Houston, where he was
employed for 40 years,
retiring in 1986. He mar-
ried Betty Jean East on
December 5, 1970 in
Winnie, Texas. He moved
back to Panola County in
1992 and was a member
of the Galloway United
Methodist Church. He
was preceded in death by
his parents and his wife,
who passed away on
August 4, 2005.
Mr. McMellon is sur-
vived by his sister, Shirley
Hamilton; one nephew,
William L. Gatewood and
wife Melinda; and one
great-nephew, Chris
Graham all of the Logan
Community in Panola
County.
Serving as pallbearers
are Gary Creech, Larry
Creech, Keith Creech,
Stanley Creech, LeRoy
Creech, and Denny
NlcMillan. Serving as
honorary pallbearers are
Terry Creech and Grady
Wills.
