The Huns, thrown back on the north
side of their salient driven into the
British line*, and held on the west
side, sought a weak spot on their left
flank in ah effort to widen the base of
their wedge and to threaten Bethune.
Their attacks on the Givenchy-LaBas-

from Locon to Robecq have failed and
appear to have brought exhaustion to
the attackers.

yesterday to break thru the Britisr
lines on the Glvenchy-LaBassee sector
and the line from Robecqu to Locon,
both thrusts aimed at Bethune as a
stepping stone toward Haaebrouek. At i a i(>c
Kemmel hill, high point in the north,
German artillery was concentrating its]
fire apparently in preparation for re-!
(sumption of the attacks on that im-
portant holding which the British have i (
retained in the face of the most des-1 s
perate assaults thru the past several
days.
In Hie south, on the Amiens sector
the French artillery smashed German I quietm
machine-gun nests and this may pre- activity on
sage developments in that sector, that
except for artillery duels has been com- I
parativelv quiet since the Huns began
their drive on the north against
British.
Italians in Great Battle
Premier Orlando announced in
Chamber of Deputies that Italian troops
would lie dispatched Io aid Hie Brit-
ish and French ami Americans in the
west, but the Italian embassy at AA’ash- |
ington said that Italian troops were I
already farming the allied right wing
in France, which may mean that by
taking over the exterme eastern sec-
tor form Switzerland westward they
have relieved French troops who have
gone to the more active fronts. Italy
has an abundance ot men. being short
only on supplies, and evidently calcu-
lates that it can spare forces from its
own front where the advertised Aus-
trian offensive has not yet begun. •
Increased activity against the Belgian
front, between Langeniarck and Kipp,
was reported in last night's statements,
but met with poor sijycess, the Bel-
gians taking 600 prisoners, including
numerous officers after the Huns h id
