DOROTHY ANN RIPPER
Mae of Schulenburg, and sister Evelyn Ripper of Schulenburg, along with
many nieces and nephews and their families.
Growing up, she attended rural schools in the Fayette County area including
Middle Creek and Svetlo School. She attended school through the beginning
of her high school years and later received her GED. All the kids worked in the
fields picking cotton and doing their chores on the farm. Many of the older
brothers joined in the service and Dorothy used to tell stories of waiting to
receive a letter from them in the mail so they could steam off the stamp to
find out what was written underneath to show where they were stationed.
She loved to read and subscribed to all the local newspapers in order to
keep up with the local news and world events. She didn't miss reading even
the smallest article in the paper.
Dorothy worked for several years at C&M Storage in Schulenburg before
she and her sister Evelyn opened Ripper's Garden Center. They sold flowers
at the home and gave advice on caring for plants to all who came to shop
with them, making many friends over the 24 years they were in operation.
Dorothy was a caretaker to several of her family members over the years,
including her Dad and Mom, sister Olga Trojacek and brother Ervin Ripper. She
loved to cook and also sewed her own clothes. Dorothy always had time for
her nieces and nephews whenever the families came to visit. She helped the
kids build Easter nests out of flowers they picked together and she always
had something to put in the nest for each kid. Many will remember the candy
canes put on the Christmas tree and how everyone got one when they left to
go home. Dorothy was very active in Catholic Daughters Court St. Rose 1597
and Hermann Sons. Sheenjoyed quilting with a group of ladies and they usually
donated the quilts to the Catholic Daughters' annual fundraiser.
Visitation was held Wednesday, March 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at
Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home, followed by a rosary at 1:30 p.m. at
St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. The rosary was led by Rev. Tim Kosler and
Catholic Daughters Court St. Rose 1597. The funeral followed at 2 p.m. at St.
Rose Church, with burial at the St. Rose Cemetery.
