State Comptroller John Sharp re-
minds Texas businesses that they
must render their property with
county appraisal districts by March
31. To render is to list the taxable
property that businesses owned or
managed as of January I. 1993.
State law requires that anyone
who owns or manages income-
producing personal property on
January I must render with the local
appraisal district.
"For example, business must re-
port their inventories, furniture and
fixtures, machinery and equipment
and other tangible personal property
by filing this annual report." Sharp
said. “Appraisal districts use the
repons to set business property
values. When a business owner
doesn't render hi* or her property,
the chief appraiser estimates the
value."
Sharp also announced that prop-

value report that could lower their
final tax bills.
“In late November, tornadoes in
the Houston area caused severe
property damage. Those owners may
be able to get a tax break to help
them through the tough times,"
Sharp said.
While state law requires business
owners and operators to render, any
property owner • including home-
owners. farmers and ranchers ■ may
file one. Also, property owners may
receive 30 extra days to file the
reports, but they must ask the
appraisal district for the extra days -
in writing - by the March 31 dead-
line.
"Homeowners who render are in a
better position to apply their rights
as taxpayers.” Sharp said. "They
are ensuring that the apraisal district
has their correct address to they will
receive notices of any action* that
affect their property or tax bills."
If the tax collector can't deliver a
tax bill because of an incorrect
address, the property owner is still
responsible for paying the taxes plus
the penalties that result for late
payment. Sharp said.
Also, property owners can record
county dollars in lawsuit* if an
inspector inspection is faulty.
