By Nanalee Nichols
Normally I bounce in to work
on Monday morning with a
whole weekends worth of ideas
to bat around in my brain.
Usually, one of those batty ideas
(can’t believe I just admitted to
that) will resolve into a column
to fill the space here beneath
the buffalo, instead I’ve been
buffaloed.
Things have been moving
fast and furious.
And, in the hurry and scurry
of trying to get all the political
ads made up, in trying to keep
’i an car to the ground about a
dozen or so things, I completely
forgot about doing a column.
Tuesday, always a busy day
at best, wasat it’sabsolule worst.
The phone seemed to have
been taken over by some mad
personality of it’s own and rang
constantly.
People poured in and out of
the office.
Things didn’t work the way
they should.
At three in lhe afternoon 1
realized that I hadn’t even had a
chance to go through the day’s
mail, much less write a col
umn.
1 received a call from Mt.
Vcmon to have Thomas come
and pick up an ad. Of course,
every place I called in the Mt.
Pleasant area (where he was
supposed to be) said he had
already been there and left.
We went to Mt. Vernon at
seven that night.
It’s ten o’clock on Tuesday
night. I'm happy with lhe way
the day has gone, but need to
write this column.
So, here I sit, with only those
batty ideas fluttering around in
my head, but none of'em ready to
light.
I recall that Friday and Satur-
day were absolutely gorgeous.
The sun was glorious, the birds
were in fine tune, and the daffo-
dils, flowering quince and for-
sythia were as perfect as only
early- spring -time- nature can
produce: Now, it's wintcry once
again as rain slashes down and
everything looks bare and gray
again.
Spring has made a promise,
but winter wants to try and break
it. But no, the weather isn't
enough for a colulmn Cither.
1 had the momentary thought
that we've come to a stage at the
newspapers where we no longer
have a functioning typcwritcr-
and don't need one! Everything
goes directly into the computer.
But that won't make a whole
column, cither.
1 thought about the idea I had
about writing about politics...but
it won't lake shape.
Here 1 it looking at the key-
board and screen and wondering
what 1 can write about except
urging people to go vole. But
nothing anyone seems to say or
do seems to boost voter turn out
much.
Finally, though, as I've pul all
these ramblings down, I have
come to the knowledge that I
lon'l have to write a column for
this week...my pondcrings and
musing have shaped themselves
into a little column on their
own...almost without my help!
It's a good thing my uncon-
scious can actwithoutmuch help
from my conscious....or this space
would probably be blank right
now.
I guess it's true what a man
said to me once.
"Mam’" he grinned, "It's nice
to meet you in person .I’ve been
reading your column for
years...and you sure have a wierd
mind!" I tookitasacomplimcnt!

Spring is the season when the days
get longer, flowers blooin and blue-
birds come back to find the houses
you offered them last year. And, in
even-numbered years like 1992, its
the season for elections -al least three
of them.
The elections can gel a little con
fusing. We’ll try to help you figure
out what’s going on.
PARTY PRIMARIES
If you listen to the big-city media,

The primaries will be held on
Tuesday, March 10, with the polls
open from 7 a m, to 7 p.m. Unless
you have moved since registering
you will probably vote at the same
location as you did last time. Demo-
cratic voting boxes are located all
oxer-Lamar, Red River and Titus
Counties, but you must vote at the
box in the voting precinct in which
you reside. Republican boxes, by
decision of the party, are less numer-
