The tax boards will not

that every tax board is asking
for more money regardless of
how hard times may be. The

EDITOR’S NOTE: Lately I have received several letters

At this writing, the Dallas Cowboys are preparing for their last
exhibition football game with the Houston Oilers. Coach Jimmy
Johnson has said that he will announce the starting quarterback
for the season. He says there is no quarterback controversy",
only competition. Up to this point, he is right. But after this time,
there will be controversy. My guess is that he will announce 1Toy
Aikman as the starter and Steve Walsh supporters will set up a
clamor for him. The first interception or loss will increase the
cries that the wrong decision was made.
Even though Johnson Is not one of my favorite coaches. I fully
support him in making the hard choice of one quarterback and
sticking with it through thick and thin. (I believe this season will
see more thin than thick.) Having played a little football back in
the early days of leather helmets and no face masks. I know that
the quarterback in the master <>l the team There is no other
position which is as Important to leadership. He touches the ball
on almost every play and his drive and determination are
contagious for the team as a whole If your quarterback is having
a good day, usually the whole team is having a good day and
vice versa. It is absolutely imperative that the team believe in
the quarterback or all is lost. Johnson was convinced more than
anything else that the Cowboys did not believe in Steve Pelleur.
He could not lead, at least in the mind of the coach.
You may wonder what all this Is leading up to. how does this
affect our individual lives. It goes to (he j>oint of a statement from
the Bible, "You cannot serve (wo masters! I( is a profound but
simple truth which applies to all of us It is a psychologically
sound principle that we simply cannot break. II is the reason no
team can really have two starting <|uarterbacks. It is also the
reason that we cannot truly have two "masters in our lives.
Life demands that we set priorities, and having done that, to
put them in descending order so that we choose one above all to
which we will give our total devotion. Of course, what (or who) that
"master" is depends on each person. For MacBeth, it was his
all-consuming ambition to be the king of Scotland, even at the
price of his own integrity as he participated in the murder of King
Duncan. For Faust, it was the desire to keep his youth, even at
the price of making a pact with (he Devil. For some today, it is
putting aside everything else in order to concentrate on making
money. For still others, It is a frantic search for fame or power.
Whatever comes first in our lives, is our master and nothing can
come before It.
We are emotionally put together so that it is impossible for us
to have two "masters" at the same time. We are bound to hold one
in contempt If we try to serve both. Most of us know what it would
take to become rich, but we are not willing to pay the price to
serve that master of our lives, lorn Landry always put his
priorities in this order.....God....family, football. If he got those
mixed up. he knew his effectiveness as a coach and as a person
would be seriously compromised.
Who or what is my master? This is the question we all need to
ask ourselves as we go through each day s activities. We all have
one master that supersedes all others. When (he crunch comes,
that master will win out over all others. If we don't like having
that as the "quarterback of our life, then we have to move to
choose a new one.
if Aikman doesn't work out, you can bet that Johnson will
replace him with Walsh in mid season. Even if we are in the
mid-season of our lives, if we are not happy with where life is
taking us, maybe we need to take a new look at ourselves and our
master and find one that will bring us the happiness each one of
us wants out of life.
If we think we can have it both ways, that we can equally serve
to masters, then we will have a controversy within ourselves
greater than any on the Cowboys. For it Just isn't possible and
never has been. We are put together to follow one supreme
loyalty and that makes life worth living.
