Burger sandwich sale was held

The sandwich sale was
named after Tommy Maxey, son
of Andrew and Tomye Maxey.
At the age of 18, Maxey was
diagnosed with cancer. "The
cancer that he was diagnosed
with was an extremely rare
type," said Mrs. Maxey. She
said that he spent August 1977
until the middle of January 1978
at M.D. Anderson Hospital in
Houston.
In January, when Tommy left
the hospital for the first tiijjj in
almost six months, he returned
to school and soon began

Leonard and Arlie Jones, of the

Also surviving Jones are his
sisters, Mary Lou Johnson, of
the Yarnell Community, and

chemotherapy, but he had to
have the therapy to live," said

After Tommy passed away,
Carthage Lions Club organized
the Maxey Burger sandwich
sale. All proceeds went to
helping the Maxeys in
compensating
medical bills.
After helping the Maxeys,
Lions Club decided to continue
their charity. Since 1977,
Carthage Lions Club has held
the annual Maxey Burger
sandwich sale. From
1978 until now, all proceeds go
to the Panola County United
Way.

Carthage Missionary Baptist
Church. The Revs. Wayne But-

follow in the Adams Cemetery
in the Galloway Community un-
der the direction of Lipsey

Sunday at her residence.
Bom Dec. 17, 1924 in Panola
County, she was the daughter of
Grady Alvin and Ella Mae
Alexander Johnson. She was a
devoted wife, mother and
grandmother, and always put the
well being of others before her-
self. She was a charter member
and dispatcher of the Flatwoods
Volunteer Fire Department, and
a nurse assistant for many years.
She loved gardening, bowling
and was an avid collector of
Teddy Bears. She was preceded
in death by her husband of forty
years, Herman Ervin Yount,
who died April 1, 1981; her
