IN FROM A FLIGHT ....
flight.
There may be a 30 year gap be-
tween them, but two former
Llanoites are realizing the same
dream, in the same place, at the
same time.
Well, the dream may be a little
different
Blake Ashley has wanted to be a
pilot for almost 14 years and for the
past six years, has worked long and
hard to attain that goal.
John Moran has been a pilot for
more than 49 years.
Moran, a 1949 graduate of Llano
High School and a 1952 graduate of *
Baylor University, became the first
Llano resident to enter jet training
in the military. It was during the
Korean War that he learned to fly
jets from 1952 to 1956. From there
he linked up with Delta Air .ines
and flew passenger jets for 36 years.
Now, he is the Vice President of
Operations and part owner of Value
But for now, he'll grow with the
air line and will keep on working to
make the jump from first officer to
captain and at only 29 years old,
could be one of the younger pilots
to do so.
\‘Jtf, an up and coming airline in
~ ■ Atlanta, Georgia and is continuing
' to fill his dreams in the field of
aviation.
That is where he and Ashley
have come into contact.
After learning to fly through
private means, taking a lessons here
and there, and flying anything with
wings to scratch out a living while
learning and advancing in his skill,
Ashley is flying jets for Moran's
company.
Ashley, a 1983 graduate of Llano
High School, and a 1987 graduate
of Texas Christian University, took
his first job as’a flight instructor in
1991 in Ft. Worth. From there he
instructed while gaining each level
of flight. From instructor to in-
strument rating, to commercial li-
cense, to airline transport pilot, and
now to type rating (jet certifica-
tion).
Now, just a little more than six
years after taking his first flying
lesson, Ashley is a first officer or
co-pilot for Value Jet flying DC-9's
throughout South and Southeast
United States. Not going through
the military for his training, Ashley
had a tough, and expensive, row to
hoe.
"There were a lot of times that I
felt like giving up," said Ashley.
"When you're barely making
enough to get by and you have to
come up with $7,000 for training
to get a better job, you wonder why
you're doing it."
But, when Ashley steps into the
cockpit and begins pre-flight then
hears the roar of the engine, it all
comes into perspective - "it was
worth it."
Moran is glad to have a fellow
Llanoite.
"We're extremely glad to have
someone of Blake's calibre on our
team," he said and added how com-
mendable it is for someone to $>
through civilian training and reach
the level that Ashley has.
"Historically, most of the pilots
I've hired, at Della and here at Value
Jet, have been military pilots but
this is going to be the wave of the
future," Moran commented. "The
military is cutting back, training
less pilots, and keeping those they
do train, so the major carriers will
have to start looking to the civilian
pilots." ,
Value Jet Air Lines is a low-cost
carrier that had daily DC-9 service
to major cities within a 750-mile
radius of Atlanta. The motto of the
air line is "Good Times, Great
Fares!"
"We're a real relaxed carrier and
we try co maintain that image from

Ashley Llano's latest pilot,
Moran helps realize dream
our pilots to our airport personnel
to our flight attendants," said
Moran, who retired from Delta at
age 60. "We're safe and our pilots
are highly trained, but we also
have time to let our hair down and
have fun with the passengers."

Everyone who owns a home of any size in Texas has
asked those timeless questions, "How can I lower
my home energy bills? How can I lower my taxes?"
One answer is propane. Propane is the fiscally correct
energy fiiel that cooks yoiir food, heats your water,
dries your clothes and warms your home.
Propane won't waste your hard-earned dollars
i it won't pollute our Texas skies. Propane.
The choice. The clear choice. It can tower your
home energy bills. We'll get back to you about those taxes.
