derful collection of cookbooks.
There is always a pot of coffee
brewing, filling the room with
wonderful aromas of the differ-
ent kinds of coffee she sells. Plans
for the future include cooking and
product demonstrations.
The Main Street Advisory
Board and the Design Commit-
tee has prepared a matching fa-
cade grant for the merchants to
encourage restoration and reno-
vation of the historic commercial
district. Details of the grant will
be publicized and available in the
next couple of weeks.
The Promotion Committee will
have Courthouse Tours this Sat-
urday, August 23 in conjunction
with the Western Jubilee. We will
have the tours starting at 11 a.m.
until I p.m, plus an added attrac-
tion of music in the gazebo. I
would like for the merchants to
consider having a sidewalk sale
to coincide with the event. I hope
everyone will go to the Western
Jubilee Saturday night, and enjoy
the Chuck Wagon Dinner before
the show on the banks of the Ll-
ano River.

By Sarah (). Franklin
The native stone building on
the corner of Main street and
Berry is one of the oldest build-
ings in Llano. Il probably had
more occupants than any other
building in Llano. The ownership
dates back tp 1875 lo J. M.
Bourland and G. W. Miller.
Bourland built the two story
structure with stone brought in by
ox carts from common rock quar-
ries in 1880. This building is part
of the Main Street Historic Com-
mercial District and is in the Na-
tional Register of Historic Places.
According to Wilburn Oatman,
Sr. in Llano Gem of the Hill
Country the building has a stor-
age cellar, ami m the early days
was used as a jail. There was an
iron gate in the south end and a
double door in the north which
opened to an entrance in the
undersection by way of a short
stairway. At that time, of course,
there were no sidewalks. The col-
orful language of the prisoners
created quite a stir to passers by.
The guards stood just outside the
north double door.
Dr. J. Duff Brown, a prominent
early Llano physician, bought the
lower story. He bought the upper
story in 1887 after the Llano Ma-
sonic Lodge moved to another
location.
I. Pessels had his mercantile
store in there in the mid 188()’s
until 1892. Dr. Brown then put in
a drug store, having his medical
practice in the upper floor.
It became a furniture and un-
dertaking establishment owned
by A.P. Brown. Laudersteins hail
a general merchandise store in the
mid l88O's.
In the early days the building
may have had several occupant^
in small spaces in the same build-
ing. In 1890, J.C. Oatman and
Ben F. Gooch had a real estate
office there.
George W. Phillips, then James
G. Phillips, had a business in the
building in the I89()’s. It was at
one time a hardware store owned
by H.C. Buttery and G. Bogush.
John Peeler had a confection-
ery store in the lower story, sell-
ing cold drinks. It was the dental
offices of P. H. Callahan until he
built a small office on the south
side of the courthouse square.
Many of these merchants
moved from building to building
such as I. Pessels. who. through
the years had his mercantile store
on nearly every side of the court-
house square.
When the Llano Library was
being restored on Ford Street, one
of the layers of paint showed
Pessels in the upper facade.
In the 1900's David Martin had
his telephone company office in
the building until it burned. Later
when it was rebuilt, the Southern
Hotel had an annex for rooms
upstairs. Pauline Collins had an
apartment upstairs for years. In
the early teens Mrs. Heard had
her millinery shop here. Ladies
of Llano were quite fashionable
if they owned a hat purchased
from Mrs. Heard.
Other occupants w'ere
Newsom’s Cash Carry Grocery,
another millinary shop ow ned by
Mrs. Linden Foster and Mrs. Lee
Averey, C. J. Whighams Home
Appliance Store, and more re-
cently, Montgomery Wards.
Henry Buttery purchased the
store in the 1970’s for use as stor-
age.
The present occupant is Karen
Robertson’s Main Gourmet. The
building has been painted a soft
avocado green with a matching
canvas striped awning. It is a
wonderful addition to Llano.
Karen is the daughter of Sue and
the late Jim Stumfoil. She gradu-
ated from Llano High School in
1965. then from Incarnate Word
college in San Antonio in 1970.
After the death of her husband,
Karen decided to move back to
Llano and start a business ven-
ture.
She opened with a fanfare on
July IO. 2002 with a wonderful
cooking demonstration. Her
products include unusual kitchen
