Sweet tboogbts, bright dreatns, my com-
fort be,
Al! comfort else has flown ;
For every hope was false to me,
And here I am, alone.
What thoughts were mine in early youth!
Like some old Irish song,
Brimful of lore, of life and truth,
My spirit gushed along.
I hoped to right my native isle,
I hopsd a soldier’s fame,
I hoped to rest in woman’s smile,
And win a minstrel’s name.
Oh! little have I served my land.
No laurels press my brow.
1 hive no woman’s heart or hand,
Nor minstrel’s honors now.
But fancy has a magic power,
It brings no wreath nor crown,
But woman’s love, the self-same hour,
h-snrites oppression down.
Sweet thoughts, bright dreams, my com-
fort be,
1 have no joy beside ; I
Oh! throng around, and be to me
Power, country, fame, aod bride. r
ers stamp diligently amid the masses, and .
l expressed juice pours plentifully out of a
hole level with the bottom of the trough,
into a sieve of iron or wicker-work', which
stops the passage of the skins, and from
thence drains into tubs below. Suppose
at tbe moment of our arrival the curvier
for a brief space empty. The treaders—
big, perspiring men, in shirts and tucked
up trowsers—spattered to the eyes with
spatebes of purple juice, lean upon their
wooden spades and wipe their foreheads.
But their respite is snort. The creak of
another cart-load of tubsjs heard, and im-
mediately the wargorris booked uip io ihe
broad, open window,-or rather hole in
tbe wall, above the trough. A minute
fo-wrenph out iuh after tub, and
to tilt their al. e.Kly hdif-Mna»hed clusters
plish into the ieekingpr.x.wir. Phen to
work again ; jumping with a sort of spite-
ful eagerness into tbe mountain of yield-
ing. quivering fruit, the treaders sink al-
moat to'the knees, stamping and jumping
and rioting in the massea of grapes, as
fountains of juice spurt about their feet
and rush bubbling
Presently, having, at
first sweet blood ‘ofr the n<
eager tramping subsides :
quiet, measured dance* which the tread-
ers oofeflfttle, while, with their wooden
spades, they turn the pulpy remnants of
the fruit over, so as to expose the half-
squeexed berries in every way to tbe mus-
cular action of the incessantly moving feet.
Com holding up their Milk.—A few
years ago I bought a young icow, which
proved to be very wild, and I took
away her first calf, she would »mt give her
milk. I heard it remaiked, that putting
a weight on a. cow’s back, wotHd make
her give her milk down. I accordingly
drove her in a stable, got a buMiel of grain
aod put it ho Iter back. While kept in
this posidou she bad no power to hold up
her milk, for it carne down freely. After
doing tins a few times, end a her wank
putting my band on lhe bat k of the cow,
it Would give way, and she would imme-
diately give down her milk.

GASTRIC JUICE
Prepared from Rennet, or the fdurth stomach of
the Ox, after directions of Baron Liebig, the great
physiological hemist, by J S Houghton, M. D , ol
Philadelphia, Pa.
I DIGEST” Such is the true meaning of the
word PEPSIN. It is the chhf »lenient, or great
digesting primen !e of the gastric juice—the solvent
of tbe food, the purifying, preserving, find stimulate
ing agent of the stomach and intesiines. It is ex-
tiacted from the digestive stomach ot the ox.—thus
forming n true digestive fluid, precisely like the
natural Gastric Juice in its chemical powers, and
furnishing a complete and perfect substitute for it
This is nature’s own remedy for in unhealthy
stomach. No art of man can equal its curative
powers. It contains no alcohol, bitters, acids, or
nauseous drugs. It is extremely agreeable to the
taste, and may be taken by the most feeble pa'iettts
who cannot cat a water cracker withteit acu’e dis-
tress. Beware of drugged imitation*- Pepsin is
no n drug.
Half a tettspoonful of Pepsin infused in water,
will digest or dissolve five pounds of Roast Beef in
about two hours, out of the stomach.
SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE.
The scientific evidence upon which this remedy
is based is in the highest degiee curious and
markable*
Call on the Agent, and get a Descriptive circular,
gratis, giving a large amount of Scient fic Evidence
from Liebig's A^jmal Chemistry : Dr. Combe’s
Physiology of Digestion; Dr. Pereira ion Food and
Diet; Dr. John W. Draper, of New York Univer
sity ; Prof. Dunglisoi/s Physiology ; Prof billiman
of Yale College ; Dr. Carpenter’s Physiology, etc,
together with Reports of cures, from all parts of the
United States.
PEPSIN IN FLUID k POWDER.
Dr. Houghton’s Pepsin is prepared in Powdet
