the Rev. Kirk M. Beard, Method-
ist pastors, and grandsons were
pallbearers. Burial was in Union
Grove Cemetery near Reno.
The former Miss Samantha Up- i
church, Mrs. Blackburn was born
in Tennessee, Feb. 13, 1859. Her
husband died in 1943.

Mt. Pleasant with their husbands.

ed and gifts were exchanged from

Buckmans Have
Christmas Party
Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Buckman
entertained with a Christmas
party'Wednesday evening honor-
ing the bank employees and a
few friends. The holiday motif
was used throughout the house.
A lovely arrangement centered
the retreshment table which was
covered with a white organdy
cloth. Pink tapers burned in sil-
ver candelabra, three silver min-
iature boots filled with make be-
lief money, with the names of
each bank employee was in the
arrangement.
Mrs. Buckman poured coffee
from a silver coffee service, as-
sisted by Mrs. Marcus Gibson.
Lovely sandwiches, pickles, olives
and salted nuts and fruit cake
were served. Canasta and 42
was the diversion of the evening.
Lynn Buckman gave several pia-
no selections.
Enjoying the evening were Mr.
and Mrs. William Rozelll, Peck
Hudson, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Bar-
nard, Mr. and Mrs. Travis Hale,
Mr. and Mrs. Britt Lassiter, Mr.

Base at Harlingen, had spent a
3-day leave with his mother,

had been in a Navy hospital
somewhere in the South Pacific.
His brother, Nevall (Bill) Bry-
son SC3c, had been in Hawaii.
Work in relieving the supply
problem in Normandy had earn-
ed for Capt. Seabe DeBerry of
Austin, the Army’s Bronze Star
medal.
A son, named Sammy Joe, had
been born to Mr. and Mrs. Bill
Ward at their home on Deport Rl.
A daughter had been born to
Mr. and Mrs. I. T. Stephenson.
She had been named Gayle Ann
Frances.
Mrs. Bob Fleming had received
a letter from her husband, saying
he had been in England, France
and Belgium, had liked Belgium
best, the Belgians being the
friendliest people he had met.
Miss Maxine Smith of Ful-
bright and Charles Foster had
been married.
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Merritt of
Pattonville, had three sons , and
a son-in-law serving in the arm-

ritt had been awarded the Pur-
ple Heart in Italy; Edgar T. Mer-
ritt had been transferred from
Guadalcanal to Guam^Cpl. Tom-
P. Claxton, son by a former mar-
riage, had been with Gen. Joseph
Stillwell in Burma jungles. The
Merritts’ son-in-law, First Lieut.
Joe R. McLemore of Dallas, had
spent two years in Hawaii and
the Marianas.
Wayne Grogan of Rugby, was
to receive his Doctor of Veterin-
ary Medicine degree from A. &
M. College in June, and was se-
lected for “Who’s Who Among
Students in American Universi-
and(ties” in the 1943-44 edition.
Mrs. J. L. Rollins received
word Friday morning that her
brother, O. B. Baxter, had been
run over by a car and killed in
Newport, Tenn. Mr. and Mrs.
Rollins, accompanied by their
niece, Miss Shirley Harris of
Waco, and Mrs. B. F. Granberry
of Texarkana, left Friday night
to attend the funeral held on Sat-
urday afternoon.
Mr. Baxter is survived by his
wife, three daughters and one
son, his mother, Mrs. C. A. Bax-
ter of Del Rio, Tenn., five sisters,
Mrs. J. L. Rollins, Talco; Mrs.
B. F. Granberry of Texarkana.

Children of the Meneely Sun-
day School had their Christmas
program and tree at the church
Sunday night. The program was
sponsored by Miss Beulah Mit-
chell, Mmes. Mack Glover, How-
ard Bryson and Doyle Glover.
There were Christmas carols and
readings by the children. Gifts
and bags of fruit were distribut-
ed from the tree. Bags of fruit
and candy were distributed Mon-
day to shut-in friends in town.
