I n August, 1862 General Robert E. Lee marched with General
James Longstreet to join Brigadier General Thomas J. Jackson at
Bull Run (also known as The Second battle of Manassas). This
was the only time during the Civil War that all three of these great
Confederate Generals fought together. Lee’s bold and brilliant
Second Battle of Manassas campaign opened the way for the
South’s first invasion of the North. It was at Bull Run that Jackson
acquired his nickname “Stonewall”.

I
who lives with a Chihuahua
who naps atop his back and
walks up and down him if he
can’t get settled. One theory I
heard is that it is simpler for
the large dog to let the tiny dog
do what he wants rather than
hear all that high-pitched
yapping if the little fella
doesn’t get his way.
We have a family in town
who has a Rottweiler male
and a tiny female Chihuahua.
The Chihuahua has
established dominance over
the Rotty and runs his life. It
may be out of kindness that
the Rottweiler just hasn’t
mentioned to the Chihuahua
that he could end her life in
one bite, but they look happy
standing there together with
her little face peering out from
between his front legs. Maybe
with these odd pairs of dogs the
larger dog views the tiny dog
as a pet.
My female Rottweiler-
cross, Murphy, adopted Noah,
our black cat, when he was a
kitten and used to groom him
and care fot him. I was
terrified the first time Noah
latched on to her muzzle with
his front feet dug into the top of
her face and his rear feet
latched on to her throat.
Murphy could have killed
him in one chomp. However,
she just shook her head, and
the kitten let go.
That might account for
Noah’s behavior as an adult.
Heaven knows, being taught
manners by a creature known
as the “whatapotamus” by
those who love her might
explain a lot.
Love must be taken into
account in the relationships
between our dogs, also. We
humans have friends who are
taller, smaller and different
from ourselves, and canine
friends must come in
different sizes, too. Still, to
have a little dog not yapping
in your face you could put up
with quite a bit. ,
In a discussion with
several animal owners I have
discovered a rather peculiar
phenomenon between large
dogs and tiny dogs.
One friends says her little
Jack Russell terrier - or
terrorist, as he is known at
home - sleeps on the back of
her chocolate Labrador. The
terrier, she said, finds this a
warm, mostly comfortable
(except for those bony spots)
place to cuddle up on a cold
evening. It seems strange that
the Labrador feels this is an
acceptable thing, too.

A 21-year-old Valley
View man was arrested July
26 for allegedly driving while
intoxicated.
According to police
reports, a Sanger police
officer observed a vehicle
traveling northbound on
Interstate-35 at approximately
2:30 a.m. July 26. The
vehicle’s lights were not on,
and as the officer caught up
with the vehicle and
“activated
equipment," the vehicle
accelerated and attempted to
elude the officer.
When the vehicle was
finally stopped, the driver
showed signs of intoxication
but was ’uncooperative at the
arrest scene. Once at the
