circuit telephone cable lies on the
floor of BasSxStrait, and connects
’ to the main-
land of Australia^by voice and
radio. And by this link, inhabi-
tants may talk to persons in
America, England, and Europe’by
merely raising the receiver.
Of such consequence was this
event to Australia and Tasmania,
the island to which England used
to send its criminals, that Aus-
tralia issued a special stamp com-
memorating completion of the
cable link. The stamp, shown be-
low, pictures Amphitrite holding
in one hand the ribbon of com-
