Will Open
In 'Oliver’
Miss Amanda McBroom
has been cast in a charact-
er role in the Dallas State
Fair musical “Oliver”, whi-
ch opens at the fair grounds
Monday, June 26.
Amanda will play the part
of Mrs. Sowerberry, wife
of the local undertaker. They
are the first couple to adopt
Oliver in the stage produc-
tion.
In the first act of “Oliver”
Mr. and Mrs. Sowerberry
and another character, Mr.
Bumble, will sing “That's
Your Funeral”.
Amanda is working with
leading character Jules
Munshin, who also starred
in the “Oliver” production
staged in Harlingen in Jan-
uary, 1965.
Amanda, niece of Miss
Frances Sory of Mercedes,
not only will appear in the
two-week production as Mrs.
Sowerberry, but also will
sing in the chorus. Each of
the five plays will run two
weeks, with six evening per-
formances and a Sunday af-
ternoon matinee each week.
She also will appear in the
stage productions of “South
Pacific”, “Sweet Charity,”
“Camelot” and “Briga-
doon.”
District Meet Set

All Jehovah’s Witnesses
from this area will attend a
District Convention in Gal-
veston June 29 to July 2
a the Moody Civic Center.
“K. L. Dull, Watchtower
Society representative from
Brooklyn, New York, and
circuit supervisor for the
congregations of Jehovah’s
Witnesses in this area, will
be one of the speakers on
the four-day program of Bib-
le instruction,” Frank Gla-
ce, spokesman for the local
area of Jehovah’s Witnesses,
announced. “The assembly
is not a revival, but is held
primarily to advance Chris-
tian Bible education in these
critical times.”

W. B. Lauder Jr. and
Edmond A. Turner attended
the 52nd annual meeting of
the Texas Society of CPA’s
and the 23rd annual Southern
States Conference of CPA’s.
The two organizations met
in joint sessions at the Rice
Hotel June 18-20.
Mr. Lauder and Mr.
Turner are Certified Public
Accountants in Mercedes.

Johnston, Miss Lucille John-
ston and Mr. and Mrs. Er-

Army Private First Class
Elizandro B. Garcia, 21, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Erasmo
Garcia, Route 2, Mercedes,
was assigned to the 71st
Trasnportation Company in
Vietnam, May 22.
Pvt. Garcia, a plumber
in the company near QuiNhon
entered the Army in Octo-
ber 1966 and was last sta-
tioned at Ft. Stewart, Ga.
Before entering the Army
he was employed in Imlay
City, Mich. His wife, Lupita,
lives in Mercedes.
