Results of a recent merchandis-
ing survey show that most Denton-
ites like to shop on Thursday, Fri-
day and Saturday between the
houra of 2 and 5 p.m., that they
find desirable merchandise in the
Denton stores.
The survey was made in mid-
March by merchandising students
of J. M, Brooks at North Texas
State College in conjunction with
the Retail Merchants and the Den
ton Chamber of Commerce.
The students asked 16 questions
to 2,663 people. In the analysis,
Brooks was able to accept 2,291 of
the questionaires as valid
Of the total number of valid
pollees, 84 8 per cent were women;
15.2 per cent, men; 77 per cent
were from Denton, 15 per cent from
the county, and eight per cent from
outside the county.
Fifty per cent of the people ask
ed indicated they had rather shop
on Thursday, Friday and Saturday
between 2 and 5 p m. Women
preferred for stores to stay open on
Friday nijflit, while men said they
had rather shop late on Saturday.
Of the people questioned, 53 per
cant came to town by automobile,
and 46 per cent of these said park-
ing was a problem. Eighty-two per
cent of those who found parking a
problem said that find a parking
place was the principal difficulty.
Some 38 per cent said they used
charge accounts often, and 32 per
cent bought something they didn’t
intend to buy when they came to
town.
Seventy-five per cent said they
were able to bify what they plan-
ned to buy, and 45 per cent were
able to make these purchases by
shopping at one store. Four per
cent had to shop at more than four
stores to find what they wanted.
If had not made a purchase, they
were asked why. The most frequent
answer was the price factor. Color,
size and styles played an import-
ant roll in this answer, as did poor
selection.
Eighty-seven per cent of those
questioned said they had good
sales people wait on them. They
cited qualities of good sales people
as courteous, considerate and hav-
ing a good personality.
Qualities disliked in poor sales
people were indifferent, dis-
courteous, superior or inconsiderate
attitude.
Merchandise was said to be
located conveniently in the store
by 93 per cent of those polled.
Thirty-five per cent said they made
purchases at stores because of the
selection of merchandise. Others
said they made purchases from
particular stores because of price,
charge accounts or brands.
The survey indicated that 71 per
cent go to town once each week,
and 90 per cent making shopping
trips to town at least once each
two weeks.
Pollees said they prefered
Thursday as Denton's Dollar Day.
