"You’d do anywhere," he said—
and meant it.
Since they were going iSto the
dance as Stephen MitcKell’s
guests, they drove out to -his
house just beyond --the edge of
town. It was a gray stone man-
sion, set in the midst of landscaped
grounds. It was formal and dig-
nified, very different from the
little Jordan home.
A maid admitted John and Har-
riet and showsd ..them into the
spacious living room. She inform-
ed them that Mr. Mitchell would
join them presently, then disap-
peared. A little scottie came in
to investigate the visitors. * John
tried to pat the dog, but it barked
and scampered from the room.
Harriet was looking about, very
much impressed.
"So this is how the other half
lives,” she murmered.
"It’s like a room in a movie."
She glanced at John. "I’ll bet you
have a house like this some day.”
"Why should I?"
"Welk-big exeditive, big house!”
John was pleased that she
thought he waa going to do big
things. He was not so sure of that
himself .
Some one could be heard coming
down the stairs. A moment later,
Stephen Mitchell entered the room.
He shook John’s hand, beamed
upon Harriet, and said something
about it’s being a long time since
he had gone" to a dance in the. com-
pany of two beautiful girls.

said. “She’ll be down shortly.”
Virginia sat at her dressing
table, staring vacantly into the
mirror. She was not particularity
eager to go to this dance tonight.
There was only one man she want-
ed to dance with, and he was thou-
sands of miles away.
A world had come between her
and Arturo, and she had the de-
spairing thought that she'would
not see him again. True, his ’brief
farewell note had said he waa com.
ing to the States, but this might
not have meant anything. It had
been casualty written, much as
some one would say, "Well, TH see
ycu again."
If, as Margaret Bailey had sug-
gested, John Stacy had got rid of
Arturo by buying him off, then
Arturo could not really have cared
for her. If that' was- the case, she
felt sure she wouldn’t see him
again.
She thought,' "I wish I’d had the
courage to ask John how he got
rid of Arturo." But she had too
much pride-—had been afraid of
being1 hurt. So, now, she could only
wonder—and go on loving Arturo
hopelessly. Perhaps It had always
been hopeless. After all, Arturo
had never said he loved her. . . ,
Virginia roused from her gloomy
thoughts when the maid tapped on
the .door and said Mr. Mitchell
and his guests were waiting.
"Tell them I’ll be right 0own,"
Virginia replied.
She rose and stood before the
mirror for a final inspection of her
self. She wore a gown she had
bought In Rio—one that Arturo
especially liked. It was white, with
a wide red band around the hem.
She sighed. How long ago those
glamorous days in Rio seemed to-
night!
She went from her bedroom inta
her sitting room. There, she found
McTavish, , her uncle’s Scottie,
chewing upon something under a
chair. She pushed the chair aside,
then spoke sharply to the dog.
He was chewing the Brazilisn
doll which Arturo had sent her as
a farewell gift. To her dismay,
she saw that MacTavish had al-
ready damaged it beyond repair.
He hack ripped off the calico dress,
and had chewed through the body.
The (Iried-grara stuffing was
strewn about.
As Virginia stooped to retrive
the doll, a glittering object In the
stuffing on the rug caught her
eye. She picked up what looked
like a bit of glass or a small
crystal.
Wide-eyed, she held it to the
light. Her heart skipped a beat.
The thing waa an industrial dia-
mond! She had seen her father
with enough of them to know
She began probing in the doll's
body. As she expected, she found
more diamonds—a score more. A
chill seized her as she raaMaed the
significance of her find.
Gripping the dlamonda in one
hand and the doll in the other, she
went in search of Margaret Bailey
She found the older woman In her
room down the hall.

CHAPTER XVII
* Harriet Jordan lived In a mod-
est; white frame house with a
green shingled roof. It was ip an
unfashionable neighborhood but,
when John called that evening to
take Harriet to. the country-club
dance, he thought the house looked
. cosy and Inviting, with its lighted
windows. It was like the home in
which he himself had grown up.
He was met at the door by Har-
riet’s father, who led him Inta the
living room and introduced him to
• her mother and her young brother
Jerry. They welcomed him with
much warmth. His coming seemed
to be something of an event.
“Harriet will be down In a few
minutes,” Mrs. Jordan told him.
Sjgffreminded John of Margaret
Bailey in a house dress. Mr. Jordan
was a mlld-looking little man with
thinning gray hair. Jerry, a grin-
ning, sixteen-year-old youth, was
typically dresed in a shabby jacket
and corduroy pants •
John liked all of them—felt at
home with them. They were his
sort ot people. He could under-
* stand them, whereas he couldn’t
wholly understand ’ people .like
y*- Stephen Mitchell—and Virginia
Dane.
When Harriet appeared, she was
wearing a green evening dress
♦ , that enchanted her prettiness.
John, gazing at her admiringly,
said, "You look lovely—Harriet.”
It was the first time he had
called her by her first name.
She smiled with pleasure and
