He said he feels the Decency in

similar effect.
“The average family spends $20
a year on magazines," he said.
“If it’s spent on the right kind, it
can be a good investment in the
morals—and thus the morale—of
the entire country."
“An Unquenchable Thirst” will
be the topic of the morning mes-
sages at St. Andrew Presbyterian

Because of accusations that Pro-
testants want to turn Reformation
Sunday into an anti-Catholic rally,
the Rev. Alton C. Donsbach, pastor
of St. Paul Lutheran Church, has
restated his denomination’s belief
in the "essential unity of the Chris-
tian Church ”
Reformation Day marks the oc-
casion in 1517 when Dr. Martin
Luther nailed his now-famous 95
Theses to the church door in Wit-
tenberg. Germany, asking for the
consideration of certain reforms in
the Roman Catholic Church,
The present situation to which
the Rev. Mr. Donsbach refers is
summed up in a statement in the
New York Times, Oct. 16: “Many
conservative Protestant church-
men are planning mass distribu-
tion of anti-Catholic literature in
the last 10 days of the presidential
campaign in a bid to defeat Sen.
John F. Kennedy. The mailings
and handouts will be spurred by
sermons and rallies on Reforma-
tion Sunday. Oct. 30, when Pro-
testant feeling is at its highest.”
The Rev. Mr. Donsbach says,
“The great Protestant reformers,
such as Luther and Calvin, did not
intend to divide the church. Their
purpose was doctrinal. to restore
to the whole church the truly scrip-
tural doctrine and practice.
“Many times it must seem to the

“The editor of one magazine we

“Our stamp of approval means

earn it as to the parents and other
readers who are guided by it."

He said the program had found
wide acceptance among persons
other than Catholics. Everyone s
idea of decency, it seems, is about
the same and “people of all faiths
have found our norm is an ex-
cellent standard."
As chief of chaplains Msgr.
Ryan wrote a list of "moral
guidelines for commanders" to
help them weed out the pornog-
raphy from newstands on their
Army posts.
The outline since has been
adopted as an official Army regu-
lation, is used as a guide for
teachers in the public schools of
at least one state, and by the
wardens "of almost every federal
penitentiary in the country,” ac-
cording to the monsignor.
Also, it was Msgr. Ryan who
engineered, with the Army’s Prot-
estant and Jewish chaplains, a

it is for. but only what it is
against. What it is against must
seem, all too often, to be only
other competing parts of the
church,” he said.
The Lutheran clergyman added,
"When the present political cam-
paign is over, Protestant and Cath-
olic will still live side by side in,
I would hope, continued respect
and friendship. It would certainly
be a shame if anything said during
thi6 campaign or on Reformation
Sunday should tend to break down
this respect and friendship.
“I recognize the members of the
Roman Catholic Church as mem-
bers of the one Church of Jesus
Christ, together also with Chris-
tians in every denomination where
Christ is acknowledged as Lord
and Savior," he said. He felt con-
fident that this was the spirit of
the majority of Denton’s ministers.
Concluding his remarks, the Rev.
Mr. Donsbach said, “I believe the
future belongs, not to those persons
or parties who can most denounce
and fight against what they see as
the mistakes of others; but that
the future belongs to those who
are willing to follow as best they
can, that saying of our Lord,
