Annual parade
draws near
Just a little over two weeks
remain for participants in the annual
Jaycee Christmas Parade to prepare
their entries, report Parade Co-
Chairmen Beto Martinez and Alonzo
Calvillo.
The parade runs during the late
afternoon of December 15, featuring
cash prizes for top floats entered, the
officials says.
Civic, church, school and social
groups are encouraged to prepare
entries, whether they be floats, other
vehicles or marching groups.
At the parade’s end, on the
corner of Texas and Fourth Street,
Santa Claus will preside over the
lighting of the community Christmas
tree, the distribution of treats to
children and a concert of Christmas
music.

DEPLOYED IN DESERT
SHIELD — Pfc. Martin Cobarru-
bias has been deployed to Saudi
Arabia under Operation Desert
Shield. He is a staff member of
an aid station with the HHC 2/7
Infantry Regiment of the 24th
Infantry Division. The 1987
graduate of Mercedes High
School joined the army in
September 1988, undergoing
basic training at Fort Knox,
Kentucky. He earned certifi-
cation as a medical specialist
after advanced individual train-
ing at Fort Sam Houston. He
was later stationed at Fort Irwin,
California and Fort Stewart
Georgia. He is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Francisco Cobarru-
bias, Sr. of Bluetown.

deepest appreciation to all of our nice

condolences generously offered to us
during the recent death of our
beloved mother and sister, MA-

An arts and crafts show has been
set for December 5 at Llano Grande
Lake Park in Mercedes.
The show will feature hand-made
works of park residents, as well as
various valley artists, reports show
coordinator Ivan French. “Admis-
sion is free,” he adds, “and lunch
will be available.”
Llano Grande Park is located 1 %
miles south on Mile 2 West Road.

The Los Ebanos Study Club met
Monday November 19, in the home
of Mrs. Betty Rapp with Mrs.
Goldsby Goza as co-hostess.
Mrs. Evidna Green called the
meeting to order, leading the club
collect and salute to the flags.
Mrs. Bess Carter reported that
she would deliver the Christmas gifts
that were brought for South Texas
Hospital. Mrs. Ada Kay St. John
reminded members that the Decem-
ber 10 meeting will be a Christmas
luncheon at the Rodeway Inn. The
program will be “The Gift of
Christmas Memories” and gifts will
be exchanged.
Mrs. St. John introduced Mrs.
Grace VanBerg, who presented a
program entitled “The Gift of
Travel.” She reported on “interest-
ing places to visit” in Texas such as
Fredericksburg, Dallas, Corpus
Christi and, her personal favorite,
Galveston.
Galveston, with 32 miles of
beach, is one of Texas’ oldest
prominent cities, she said. The town
has a number of interesting sights to
