Saturday, September 28th, was a big day for the past class members that graduated from Cleburne
High School during the House System Days. Over 400 people registered to attend at the Cleburne
Conference Center and almost all made it to the event. The rain couldn’t keep them away from
coming to see and visit with classmates from years past. Attendees included graduates from the
1940’s through 1972 and remember that next year the reunion will include the class of 1973. Vicki
Gillespie, a graduate from Cleburne, backed up by the Almost Patsy Cline Band provided the music
for the evening and Doug Cain handled the announcing duties as everyone had the opportunity to
see friends from past school days.

“I knew Mike since we were young boys growing up in Cleburne,” stated
Freddy E. McFarren, Lt. General, U.S. Army Retired, in nominating Hop-
kins for alumni recognition. McFarren is a past CHS Wall of Fame honoree.
“Few people understand as I do the tremendous service Mike provided the
United States Army and our Nation during the Vietnam War, as well as his
later service both in and out of uniform.”
“Many of the members of MACVSOG were the later founders of our elite
special operations units of today,” McFarren said. “As a junior officer, Mike
Hopkins was a member of this organization. All the missions he served in
this capacity were extremely dangerous but vital to the major efforts during
that timeframe.”
McFarren describes his fellow Jacket as a hero, reflecting the leadership role
recognized by classmates and teachers alike during his schoolboy days in
Cleburne.
“It is one thing to be courageous when forced to do so, as dictated by the
situation,” stated the retired general. “It is another to know that every mis-
sion is a dangerous one. This requires a very special type of hero—Mike
was such a hero. It did not surprise me to learn that he was involved in these
covert actions, as I had been his friend since we were in elementary school.
He was raised by strong, patriotic parents.”
Hopkins played football and competed in track throughout his years at CHS.
In his varsity year, as the center for the 1960 Jackets whose record extended
to the state semifinals, he received both the Player’s Award and the Best
Blocker trophy. The honors meant a lot to the Cleburne athlete, who topped
the scales at 137.
“Mike was small in stature but had a huge heart of determination,” McFar-
ren said. “When the going got tough on the football field, Mike was always
willing to give more. He was a natural leader and his fellow players all knew
hat Mike would never give less then 100 percent. My time at West Point,
both as a cadet and later as an officer, was spent trying to build leaders of
character. When I think of a leader of character, I always think of Mike
Topkins.”
The commitment and dedication Hopkins’ gave to the game of football and
to his teammates, was soon channeled in a new direction. This time, it in-
volved service to his country, and a much more challenging--and critical-
game.
