County
Sheriff's
Column
By ALLEN DOTSON
The seven days ending last
Monday made up a relatively
quiet week for County officers.
The routine was broken by
one shooting incident in which
was filed a charge of assault
with intent to murder.
Officers also handled two
drunks, one liquor violation,
and one "sleeper".
These are things that go into
the record.
But as we begin this series
of columns, we probably should
acquaint readers with the other
functions of the County Sher-
iffs Department which must go
on, but which citizens are much
likely to be aware of than our
activities with lawbreakers.
In the past week, for exam-
ple, Department officers serv-
ed 17 civil papers. We were
also called on to play the un-
official role of counselor, and
again in several instances, to
advise on sundry matters.
The range of personal diffi-
culties of some of our citizens
covers a lot of ground. And
quite often the Sheriffs Depart-
ment becomes the third party,
although it is not charged with
responsibilities in this area.
We've described the past
week as being generally on the
routine side. We are accustom-
ed, however, to having things
erupt at the quietest moment.
It could happen during the
Christmas season. The round of
activities increase the danger
of accidents and death from
what law enforcement agencies
have come to call violent caus-
es.
All of you can help reduce
the danger by determining now
to be more careful. Remember,
merriment can be turned into
tragedy in an instant.
