“shining”—an extrasensory perception shared by both
young Danny Lloyd and Scotman Crothers, who plays the
hotel’s master chef.
From the spectacular serial photography that back-
drops the opening credits to its horrific climax almost two
and a half hours later, “The Shining” mesmerizes the
audience. Jack Nicholson has never been better, jux-
taposing moments of comedic brilliance with unbounded
terror in his multi-faceted portrayal of a man gone beserk.
Shelley Duvall’s performance as his simple but well-
meaning wife is nothing short of superb. The rest of the

“BEING THERE”
“Being There’’ is a comic fable about a man called
Chance whose naivete and essential innocence precipitate
a series of hilarious adventures through the political
labyrinth of the nation’s capitol.
Chance is without known parentage or background,
having been cared for since childhood by an old man
whose garden he lovingly tended Unable to either read or
write, he has spent his many leisure hours watching
television, and only from television has he gained
knowledge of life outside the house Upon the man’s
demise, the house is closed and he is sent away, but he has
only a few bewildered hours in which to discover the real
world before he is hit by a limousine carying Eve Rand,
wife to the country’s most powerful financier, a man of
enormous political influence
Taken to the Rand estate for medical attention, Chance
magically charms everybody—Eve’s dying husband,
Benjamin, the President of the United States, other
powerful personages and Eve Rand herself. His invocation
of simple garden metaphors to the country’s complex
economic ills is perceived by them as a fresh and different

electronic whiz kids who saturate the networks with used
car commercials; and Penthouse Pet of the Year Cheryl
Rixon as a model who strips to prove her cars are fully
loaded.
Filmed on location in Arizona, "Used Cars” features a
climactic automotive "stampede,” across the desert
outside Phoenix, involving 200 vintage cars in a high speed
chase that becomes a demolition derby.
"Used Cars” has been rated “R”.
THE SHINING
A former teacher and would-be writer, Jack Nicholson
accepts a position as a winter caretaker at an isolated
hotel in the Colorado Rockies. With his wife (Shelley
Duvall) and son (Danny Lloyd) in tow, the three take up
residence in The Overlook, whose evil history (the former
caretaker murdered his children and subsequently shot
himself) slowly exerts its influence upon Nicholson.

kind of wisdom, and by the story s finale, Chance the I
gardener has become a celebrity and man of influence. I
Thematically, "Being There” deals with the pervasive S
influence of television in our lives; of the ways in which the R
medium alters our perception of the world, and of its fl
transforming effect on people and events. Its impact is felt g
perhaps most directly in the upper echelons of d
government, thus the story's setting of Washington, D.C. <
On a different level, “Being There” may be seen as a 1
parable about the power of simplicity. Chance’s monastic A
existence has left him, in the words of the director, “with a
childlike aura,” and of the author, “devoid of any
particular will which might trigger a negative reaction.”
People respond to him affirmatively, imbuing the simple
gardener with virtues of wisdom, insight-even d
holiness- larger absent from others in the world around ■
