Scholarship fund honors memory of Colin Carroll
TEXAS STATE RAILROAD
RICKY HASSELL
Rush
It is hard to believe that al-
most three years have passed
since the untimely death of
Collin Jeffrey Carroll. I know
that his life meant so much to
you. to our community, and to
all those who knew him in the
many places his I i lb led him.
One way we can keep Col-
lin's memory alive, and espe-
cially keep ahve his wonderful
values and beliefs, is through
the Collin Carroll Memorial
Scholarship.
The Collin Carroll Memo-
rial Scholarship is a $1,000
award presented each year to
a graduating senior at Rusk
High School. The qualifica-
tions for the award are an
application from the senior,
a letter of recommendation
from the student's pastor or
youth minister, aswellascon-
sideration for participation
in the high school activities
which Collin so loved includ-
ing athletics, student council
and band.
In order for us to secure
the future of this scholarship,
$25,000 is needed, which
will help the fund to reach
endowed status. This simply
means that it will earn enough
interest, at this amount, to
award a $1,000 scholarship for
many, many years to come.
This is the desire of those
who began this in memory of
Collin Carroll—to always have
a memorial to remindother s of
whoiswasandwhathe meant
to so many people.
Can you think of a better
tribute to his family than
knowing he will be remem-
bered every year at the schol-
arship award banquet at the
high school from which he
graduated?
If you would like to be a part
of this memorial to Collin,
please send your contribu-
tion to: The Collin Carroll
Memorial Scholarship Com-
mittee, P.O. Box 404. Rusk,
TX 75785.
All contributions are tax-
deductible. Any amount you
can contribute will go toward
the goal of it becoming en-
dowed.
If you have any questions
or comments, please contact
committee chairman Ricky
Has sell at (903) 683-4368.
I will leave you with a quote
from Collin's journal he began
on his Mercy Ship journey to
Liberia in the summer of2007.
right before his untimely
death. This quote reminds us
of why Collin was so special:
"I have two oplions. I can
start a meaningless job that
I would soon have to leave to
continue my education, or I
can do something that will
have a profound and mean-
ingful effect on my life while
glorifying God and helping
those in need. I choose the
latter.''

KRIS MORGAN
Rush
As most of you are aware,
the Rusk Fire Department,
in conjunction with Chero-
kee County Sheriffs Office,
Rusk Police Department,
Texas Department of Public
Safety, Justice of the Peace
Brenda Dominy, East Texas
Medical Center, Dwayne
Coates with Trinity Mother
Frances, Isaacs Wrecker
Service, Mothers Against
Drunk Driving (MADD) and
Wallace-Thompson Funeral
Home participated in the
second "Consequences' at the
Rusk High School.
The focus for this year was
on the dangers of testing and
chiving.
The idea behind the pro-
gram is to not only have an
informative segment that has
different speakers and other
information, but to actually
see what happens when a
tragic accident occurs and the
staggering amount of people
that are called into action to
respond to the accident.
For this rea son, the program
is given to junior s and seniors
who are already, or will soon
be, driving.
While I do not have a cur-
rent count of the amount of
people, it was well over 30
people who assisted in this
years program and while I
can't comment, due to lack
of knowledge, on the amount
of preparation of the other
departments and businesses
involved, I can explain what
just our little segment of the
program entailed.
The mock accident took
place in the new high school
parking lot, just west of the
main entrance to the high
school. In this scenario, two
vehicles collided head on, in-
juring four, of which one was
air-lifted from the school, and
killing one.
The students then were able
to see the: fire department,
EMS, andpohce departments
assess the scene and patients
and use the extraction tools
to remove the car doors from
the vehicle s to r e move the stu -
dents (and one fireman, Zac
Bryant) who participated in
the program as the injured.
Once the scene was assessed,
a sheet was draped over the
deceased patient while the
injured were extracted. Once
totally removed from the
vehicles, three patients were
loaded inio the ambulance and
the ETMC helicopter landed
and took the other patient
away.
During this portion of the
program, James Sanchez and
Terry Phillips explained to
the group of students what
was happening and why so
that the students could get a
"real time" and "in your face"
idea of the amount of people
and work that went on, just
to work accidents.
Once the mock accident was
over, the students returned
2 Neches River groups combine
to clean litter from river April 18
The Friends of the Neches River and the
Neches River Navy joined forces for a clean-
up effort near and dear to their hearts.
On April 18, the two groups met at the
picnic area at the junction of State High-
way 31 and the Neches for the first annual
Neches River Sweep. The clean-up spanned
two miles, ending at the start of Lake Pal-
estine.
Thi rty-Hvo individuals from both groups
participated in the event, filling up 24 large
trash bags with litter as they traveled down
the two-mile stretch.

The section of the river was chosen due to
heavy usage in the early spring due to the
spawning run of the sand bass, an activity
that has slowed in recent weeks.
The: event was organized and sponsored
by Paul Greenwood, owner of Calhoun River
Boats, Mr. Greenwood also donated several
of his boats for the expedition.
Workers participating in the Neches River
Sweep dined on hot dogs and other refresh-
ments after their work was done.
Each participant also received a free T-
shirt.
