What does it mean to be an
"open" person? I am sure that
question could be answered in
many ways, but for the moment
let us think of the answer as
"being open to the experiences
of life and to all that goes on
around us. " This does not
mean that every day should be
lived as a confessional wherein
we reveal every inner feeling.
It does mean, however, that
there are many feelings and
emotions that need not be kept
a secret. Being open to our
real feelings and the feelings
of those around us adds another
dimension to life that can be
equated with honesty and
courage.

Well, there just hasn’t been much summer weather that we haven’t
experienced this week . ... from hot temperatures to high humidity
and clear skies to cloudy and rainy .. . we have had just about a
little of it all. Monday night a massive storm hit especially hard
in the Acala area and on to the mid point to Ft. Hancock, bringing
some 2 inches of rain and some hail. The high winds did some
damage to the crops as well.
***
Gene and Lou Ann Henderson felt the brunt of the storm, it
brought their newly constructed carport down. The huge 6 inch
steel beams bent and collapsed onto their van and boat. Fortunately
no one was injured and the insurance company will help rebuild
the carport and fix the damaged van and boat. Also, Lou Ann’s
June birthday present, patio furniture, was demolished and has to
be replaced.

The valley is in prayer this day for Larry and Jamie Wheeler and
the life of their little daughter. Their first bom was a little early,
coming Wednesday instead of the predicted arrival date of Aug. 4.
Laurel weighed in at 7 lbs. and 1 oz. and has entered the world with
some very difficult problems, but with God at the helm we all
know that she will be in God’s will. May Larry and Jamie feel the
closeness of Jesus at their side during- this trying time and know
that all are praying for His will to be done and give strength and
love to this very sad couple.
**
Sunday evening Jamie Wheeler was honored with a baby shower
at Dorothy Strachen’s and it was well attended and lots of lovely
baby gifts were received. Jamie had chosen the colors of rose
and blue and the theme was carried out lovely.

It was nice to have a little visit with Bud Carr as he is down this
week to help out on the farm and have Johnny Lee ride with him
and help too. Ken and Jake left Thursday for California to view
some farming practices out that way. They will return Sunday
and Bud is taking Johnny Lee back to the lake when he goes for a
few days of having Grandma and Grandpa spoil him.

Ronnie and Alice Arm Davis are enjoying the visit of their
youngest son, Derek, who is on leave from the Navy. Derek
finished his basic training on July 4 and has two weeks to visit
here before returning to his base in Minnesota for further training.

The State FFA convention was held this week in El Paso and
there was a large turnout. In fact, the largest convention in El
Paso’s history. Some 7500 students gathered for the State meeting
and had a fine time. Many activities were held for the kids and
they took time for some business also. It was really nice to have
such a large group of students who represent the cream of the
crop for the State. Rick Perry, the State Agriculture Commissioner,
spoke to the group on Wednesday night, they all enjoyed that very
much. A dance on Thursday night was well attended and the kids
enjoyed the band Canyon. All in all it was a great week and made
all the effort well worth it.

Ken and Sara Carr enjoyed their visitors, Sara’s sister and husband,
from Dallas along with their two kids, Eric and Becca. They spent
a few days here and had fun with the great outdoors and enjoyed
Ken’s and Sara’s pool, as many of us are enjoying it. Margarite
and Ray live in a nice suburb of Dallas, but there is very little
open space at their home and so the vast quietness and lovely
view of the mountains were just perfect for vacationing.

Cantaloupes are ready! ! Anita is selling them this year and they
are coming off quite well.

The news is somewhat light this week as I suppose we are all
getting over the 4th of July celebrations and just living quietly.
Do hope that you all have the nicest of weeks and that the rain
will fall on the ranchers and give them some renewed hope for
fall pastures.
