KING FERDINAND and Queen
Isabella were holding court
in Barcelona, when Christopher
Columbus arrived at Palos, back
from a voyage of more than seven
months on the mysterious Atlantic.
Summoned to the royal presence,
the great admiral donned his best
robes and brought with him. the
Indians and other "proofs” of his
discovery of America.
Surrounded by a brilliant com-
pany of cavaliers, he approached
the royal dais. As he told his story,
he pointed to the proofs of his ad-
venture—the Indians, the parrots,
the brightly plumed birds, the
plants and gems from the islands
that he had visited. When he fin-
ished, prayers were chanted, and
Columbus was conducted to the
rooms that had been provided for
him.
The 15-cent stamp of the Co-
lumbian series of 1893 pictures
this incident, in which Columbus
announces his discovery. It is
copied from a painting by Ricardo
Balaca, in Madrid.

NEW YORK, Dec 18.—(A}-Five
persons died at dawn today in a
West Side rooming house fire
Four were burned to death inside
the four-story Brownstone build-
ing on West 73rd St. and one man
jumped to his death from a third-
floor window when the fire cut off
his escape.
The screams of the roomers arous-
ed Chester Morash, the house de-
tective of the Riverside Plaza Ho-
tel, three doors away, and he turn-
ed in ah alarm.
Four radio car policemen, the
first to arrive, went as far up in
the burning building as the third
floor, then were driven back, un-
able to locate all occupants of the
blazing structure.
The fire started from an unde-
termined cause in the room of Wil-
, liam Hoffman, third floor rear.
Hoffman, awakened by the flames,
reached the street safely.
Four perished on the top floor
when overcome by smoke. They
were Elinor Duffield, 32, and her
eight weeks old son Henry Jr, Nan-
cy Green, 25, a salesclerk and her
sister Margaret, a bookkeeper
Ann Collins, who lived in the
basement, was aroused and rushed
into the hall screaming so loudly
she awakened mary tenants Fire-
men creditedr her with saving a
number of lives
Hoffman said he thought he had
dozed off on the bed in his room
while smoking a cigarette. When
he awoke he found the bed and the
room in flames, he said, and ran
out of the building.

Dear Santa—I have been mother’s
little helper all year and mother
says that I have earned some nice
presents. I would like a cowboy suit
to go with my centennial hat and
boots, a little airplane painted red,
a train that runs around on a track
and a tricycle with big rubber tires.
Also please fill my little stockings
with fruit, nuts and candy. I am
visiting at 1308 Myrtle Street
No official launching of the pro-
ject has been ordered and none will
occur until after the" first of the
year, but that the city and county
will Jointly maintain a county-wide
radio system for police and sher-
iff's department appears settled, ac-
cording to information available.
The system will involve stepping
up the power of the present city
broadcaster from 50 watts to 100
waits, in all likelihood. Probable
costs of the increase have been dis-
cussed by the City Commission with
W B Duncan, radio technician for
the department, and though the
council has never put the matter to
a record vote, members have indi-
cated several times that the city
will co-operate with the county in
the extended system if the incom-
ing County Commissioners Court so
votes.
Because three of the four pres-
ent county commissioners are re-
placed Jan 1 with the new admin,
istration, the present court has not
attempted to act on the project for
